Chapter 13 - June’s Apology

June took longer to understand her own role.

She had never struck Eli.

Never drove.

Never deleted video.

Never pressured Nora.

Legally, no charges.

Morally:

She looked at metal while grandson bled.

Blamed Megan.

Repeated Walter’s threats.

Protected family image.

She asked me to visit when she was seventy-nine.

“What do you want?”

“To explain.”

I almost refused word.

Then:

“Not excuse.”

Fine.

She grew up in home where broken things meant money they didn’t have.

Walter built successful marine-supply business.

As money grew, June became obsessed with keeping expensive things perfect.

“A scratch meant waste.”

I said:

“A child is not a scratch.”

“I know.”

Then:

“When Eli fell, I saw plate because I knew Walter would explode about plate.”

“And not Eli?”

“I assumed you would handle Eli.”

There.

Delegated humanity.

I was mother, so they could focus property.

Then:

“I said you pay because if I made it your fault, it wasn’t ours.”

That was key.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

I said:

“I forgive.”

Different from restore.

Then she asked:

“Can I call Eli?”

“Ask him.”

He said yes.

Their relationship had already improved from apology at nine.

By college they spoke monthly.

She sent care packages.

No money with strings.

Then one Christmas she mailed him a blue keychain.

Not same one.

A joke?

I called immediately.

“What are you doing?”

She sounded confused.

“He loses keys.”

I thought.

Could be triggering.

I asked Eli.

He laughed.

“Mom, it’s just foam.”

There.

I had assigned symbolism.

He hadn’t.

He used it for dorm key.

That mattered.

Then June died at eighty-three from complications after pneumonia.

Walter still alive.

Eli came funeral voluntarily.

No unresolved.

June’s will:

Her personal assets separate from trust.

Split equally Megan/Derek after specific gifts.

No punishment.

Eli received her recipe box and $5,000 college gift? She died after college maybe. Could leave $5k each grandchild; but only Eli mentioned. Perhaps she had other grandkids. Keep general.

No big.

Then Walter lost wife.

He called me more.

Not to control.

Lonely.

I visited.

He apologized once more.

I said:

“Dad, stop.”

He smiled.

“Brandon rule?”

Wrong story. Brandon not here. Let's say:

“Derek said you made a rule about repeated apologies.”

I laughed.

Derek and Walter talking.

Family shifts.

Then Dad said:

“Do you think June forgave me?”

“For what?”

“For making control look like love.”

Deep.

“I think she understood.”

May you like

Then he cried.

No need solve.
