Chapter 22 - The Record Closes

By the time I was seventy, every formal record had ended.
Derek’s criminal sentence:
Completed decades earlier.
Walter:
Conviction satisfied.
Probation completed.
No repeat.
June:
No charges.
Nora:
Witness only.
Trust:
Terminated after sale and distributions.
Insurance:
Eli settlement paid.
Restricted account released at adulthood.
No open claim.
Lake property:
Sold.
No family title.
Security footage:
Officially retained according law, then archived/destroyed under agency policy as applicable.
No personal copy.
Blue key:
Returned to trust inventory before sale.
Presumably went with property or disposed as ordinary.
No one knew.
No need.
Then I found an old family group chat backup.
Dad:
Don’t turn this into emergency.
Mom:
Your boy damaged trailer.
Derek:
It was an accident.
Nora:
There’s a video.
I looked.
Then deleted personal export.
Not rewriting history.
No need carry.
I kept medical record summary for family health? Scar not medical issue. Could archive.
Then family photos.
I saved one from that morning:
Eli holding orange popsicle.
Blue key visible at wrist.
I almost cropped key.
Didn’t.
The key was part of day.
Not owner.
Then Sophie asked:
“What’s blue thing?”
Eli:
“Old lake key.”
That’s all.
No trauma lecture.
Then:
“Can I have one?”
May you like
“We have one on beach bag.”
Done.
