Chapter 5 - The Frame Before the ShoveLily came out of surgery with her leg wrapped from ankle to thigh.

She was groggy.

Angry.

Alive.

I sat beside her.

Did not ask forgiveness.

Not yet.

Then Officer Ruiz returned holding a tablet.

“The hotel sent an initial copy.”

My stomach tightened.

“Can Lily see?”

“She doesn’t need to right now.”

Good.

He showed me instead.

Upper hallway.

Timestamp.

Tyler walking behind Lily.

Mark ahead.

Diane behind them.

Frank farther back.

Lily stopped near stairwell.

Tyler reached for phone.

She stepped away.

Diane opened fire door.

Pointed inside.

Then Mark moved through lower door and disappeared.

Tyler pulled Lily into stairwell.

Diane followed.

The door began closing.

Then a hand appeared from the hallway.

Diane’s.

Holding it nearly shut.

Not entering.

Keeping anyone else from seeing.

Then the small landing camera.

No audio.

Tyler grabbed Lily’s jacket.

She tried moving upward.

Mark appeared below.

Blocking the lower exit.

Lily turned.

Trapped.

Tyler took phone.

Lily grabbed.

He shoved.

Her body vanished down the stairs.

Diane did not rush after her.

She waited.

Two seconds.

Then entered.

Mark looked up.

Tyler stared.

It was not a spontaneous cousin fight.

They had surrounded her.

Then something even worse.

After Lily fell, Mark came down.

He checked leg?

No.

He bent toward Tyler.

Took Lily’s phone.

Looked at screen.

Then handed it back to Tyler.

Before anyone checked Lily.

The phone mattered first.

Officer Ruiz paused.

“Mrs. Hale.”

“Yes?”

“This is what I meant when I said Tyler wasn’t the only person involved.”

Diane had held the door.

Mark blocked escape.

Both helped recover the phone.

Then Frank.

Where was he?

Hallway camera showed him approaching after fall.

He had not participated in setup.

But once he saw injury, he joined the minimization.

Different responsibility.

Important.

Then Officer Ruiz said:

“Boston detectives will determine charges. Because Tyler is seventeen, juvenile procedures may apply depending offenses and jurisdiction.”

No movie certainty.

Then the original assault video.

Noah Parker.

Boston police located him.

He and his sister had not reported.

Why?

Mark gave Noah’s sister $600 cash.

For what?

“Damaged backpack and misunderstanding.”

She accepted.

Not because she thought violence fine.

Because she was twenty and scared of a wealthy family? We weren't necessarily wealthy. Maybe just tired.

Noah had bruised ribs but no fracture.

He confirmed Tyler hit him.

Now Tyler potentially faced two incidents.

Then Diane called me from another number.

I answered.

Mistake perhaps.

“Rachel.”

“What?”

“You’re destroying this family.”

“No.”

“Tyler made one mistake.”

“He made at least two.”

“Lily provoked him.”

I laughed.

Then:

“What did Mark give Noah’s sister six hundred dollars for?”

Silence.

Diane’s voice changed.

“Who told you?”

Not denial.

Then:

“You were supposed to keep Lily under control.”

There.

“Why?”

“Because she has always been jealous of Tyler.”

I looked at my daughter asleep.

“No. You were jealous for him.”

Diane scoffed.

“Tyler has opportunities. Lily has always had problems.”

“What problems?”

“Attention seeking.”

“She had a broken leg.”

“After.”

I stopped.

“What?”

Diane realized.

Too late.

“What do you mean after?”

Silence.

Then she hung up.

I replayed it in my head.

Lily had always had problems.

After.

Was this the first time Diane had helped Tyler target her?

I looked at Lily.

When she woke, I asked:

“Has Tyler hurt you before?”

Her face told me before she spoke.

May you like

“Yes.”

Continue to the next part: Lily reveals the stairwell was not the first time Tyler hurt her, and Rachel begins confronting how long her family had trained her to dismiss her own daughter.
