“Because I wanted your phone and I thought you would give in if I scared you.”

“Yes.”
“Did you mean to break my leg?”
“No.”
“Did you care after?”
He stared down.
“At first I cared more about the video.”
Lily’s jaw tightened.
Then:
“When did that change?”
“At hospital?”
He shook.
“I didn’t see you at hospital.”

“Then when?”
“When Dad showed me the X ray.”
Why did Mark have? Maybe news. Better after police told him surgery.
“When police told us you needed emergency surgery.”
Then:
“I realized I kept telling myself you were faking because if you were really hurt, I had done something I couldn’t explain.”
That mirrored Patricia style.
Then Lily:
“You called me drama queen.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Grandma always did.”
Not excuse.
Then:
“I repeated what worked.”
Meaning dismiss her.
Then Lily asked:
“What about Noah?”
“I hit him because I was embarrassed.”
“Why did you think you could?”
“Because I usually got away with things.”
There.
Then:
“Do you blame Grandma?”
“For teaching me?”
He thought.
“Some.”
“For pushing you?”
“No.”
Good.
Then apology.
“I’m sorry I grabbed you.”
“I’m sorry I shoved you.”
“I’m sorry I took your phone.”
“I’m sorry I let everyone pretend you were lying.”
“I’m sorry you had to walk.”
He had not made that decision alone, but his act started.
Then:
“I don’t expect you to forgive me.”
Lily sat quietly.
Then:
“I forgive you.”
I stopped breathing.
“But I don’t want to be friends.”
Tyler nodded.
“That’s fair.”
Then meeting ended.
No hug.
Perfect.
Afterward Lily cried in car.
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
“Regret?”
“No.”
Then:
“I think I wanted him to still be horrible.”
Why?
“Easier.”
Yes.
People changing complicates anger.
Then she said:
“I’m glad he changed.”
That did not erase.
Then Mark.
He heard meeting went well.
He sent no message.
Respect.
Later Lily allowed him a brief coffee.
He apologized again.
They developed limited relationship.
Uncle at distance.
Then Diane.
Still no.
She completed sentence and probation.
Her no contact order eventually expired.
She sent one letter through attorney.
Lily refused unopened.
Diane stopped? For several months.
Then another.
We returned.
