Chapter 2 - What Was on Lily’s PhoneI shut the hotel room door.

“Tyler, give me the phone.”
Mark stepped forward.
“He already deleted the problem.”
My stomach tightened.
“What problem?”
Lily pushed herself higher against the pillows.
“Mom, he hit someone.”
Diane snapped:
“Enough.”
I looked at Lily.
“Who?”
“The boy from the hotel arcade.”
Tyler’s face hardened.
“What happened?”
Lily swallowed.
The night before, a fourteen year old boy named Noah Parker had been playing pool with his older sister in the hotel recreation room.
Tyler and two boys he had met on the trip started making fun of Noah’s Red Sox cap.
Words became shoving.
Noah tried to leave.
Tyler shoved him against a game machine.
Then punched him.
Twice.
Lily had been coming through the hallway.
She heard shouting.
Pulled out her phone.
Recorded the last twenty seconds.
Tyler knocking Noah down.
Kicking his backpack away.
Calling him pathetic.
Then Mark arrived.
Not to stop Tyler.
To stop Lily.
“Delete that.”
She refused.
Mark told her Noah had started it.
Lily said:
“He didn’t.”
Then Diane came.
She asked one question.
“Did anyone else record?”
Lily did not know.
Diane told her:
“Then you saw nothing.”
I stared at my mother.
“You knew?”
Diane folded her arms.
“We handled it.”
“How?”
“Mark spoke to the boy’s sister.”
Mark added:
“Noah wasn’t hurt.”
“That’s not the point.”
Tyler rolled his eyes.
“It was one punch.”
“Lily said two.”
“Who cares?”
I did.
Finally.
Then Lily whispered:
“They told me if the video got out, Tyler could lose varsity.”
Tyler had recently made varsity lacrosse.
College coaches had already begun following him.
Not scholarships yet.
Not contracts.
Possibility.
Diane treated possibility like family inheritance.
“Your cousin has a future,” she said.
I stared.
“So does Lily.”
“No one said she doesn’t.”
“You made her hand over evidence of an assault.”
Mark laughed.
“Evidence? Listen to yourself.”
Lily pointed toward Tyler.
“He took my phone in the stairwell because I said I had uploaded it.”
Everyone went still.
Tyler’s face changed.
“You said you deleted it.”
“I lied.”
For the first time, I saw fear.
Diane turned sharply.
“Uploaded where?”
Lily looked at me.
“My school drive.”
Smart girl.
Mark stepped toward bed.
“Give me the password.”
“No.”
“Lily.”
I stood between them.
“No.”
Mark stared.
“Rachel.”
“No one is touching her.”
Diane’s expression became colder.
“Now you decide to be a mother?”
The words landed exactly where she meant them to.
Because she was right about one thing.
I had failed Lily in the stairwell.
Then outside.
Then for three hours.
And every minute I waited now made it worse.
I reached for my coat.
“We’re going to the emergency room.”
Frank finally spoke.
“Tonight?”
“Yes.”
“It’s nearly nine.”
“I don’t care.”
Diane stepped into the doorway.
“You take her to a hospital and they’ll ask how she fell.”
“Good.”
Tyler’s head snapped toward her.
“Grandma.”
There.
Fear again.
Mark said:
“Rachel, don’t destroy Tyler’s future over a family argument.”
I turned toward Lily.
Her eyes filled.
My family had spent all day describing her pain as manipulation.
Now suddenly they were terrified of a doctor.
That should have been enough.
Still, I failed again.
Frank persuaded me to wait until morning.
He brought ice.
Diane ordered pizza.
Mark said emergency rooms in Boston would take hours.
And I wanted desperately to believe adults who sounded certain.
That night Lily lay on the hotel bed with her injured leg elevated.
I sat beside her.
She did not look at me.
“Lily.”
Nothing.
“I’m sorry.”
Her voice came quietly.
“You saw him push me.”
“Yes.”
“You heard the crack.”
“Yes.”
“You saw I couldn’t walk.”
“Yes.”
She finally turned.
“Then why did Grandma get a vote?”
I had no answer.
Because the truth was humiliating.
At thirty eight years old, I still behaved like Diane’s frightened daughter before I behaved like Lily’s mother.
Then Lily whispered:
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“When Tyler pulled me into the stairwell, Grandma was already there.”
I looked at her.
“She came down after.”
“No.”
Lily shook her head.
“She was behind the upper fire door.”
My skin went cold.
May you like
“She told Tyler, ‘Do it in here. There aren’t cameras.’”
Continue to the next part: Lily says Diane deliberately directed Tyler into the stairwell because she believed it was outside the hotel’s security cameras.
