Chapter 9 - The File With My Name
The spreadsheet contained twenty seven entries under my name.
Not personal information.
Work weaknesses.
“Claire has admin access.”
“Claire processes payroll exceptions.”
“Claire complained about duplicate invoices in April.”
“Claire knows Thomas-era coding poorly.”
“Claire is family-adjacent, easy motive.”
Family-adjacent.
That one made me laugh.
I had spent birthdays with the Carters.
Sat beside Thomas at hospital when he died.
Closed restaurant for his funeral.
And to Graham I was family-adjacent enough to blame.
The plan was straightforward.
If auditors found fake vendors, Graham would claim I created unauthorized entries during operational cleanup.
Melissa would say I used her approval code without permission.
Olivia’s signed statement would support.
My signed confession would finish.
Why would I sign?
Coercion.
Fear.
Melissa.
Graham assumed enough pressure could create paperwork Ethan would believe.
He had underestimated me.

At preliminary hearing, Melissa’s lawyer emphasized she had mental-health stress and financial pressure.
No diagnosis excused behavior.
Court ordered evaluation where relevant.
She remained competent.
She knew right from wrong.
She understood proceedings.
Her attorney approached prosecutor for plea.
Terms initially demanded:
Plea to aggravated assault and unlawful restraint.
Dismiss more serious attempted fetal harm theories? Prosecutors had not actually charged such. Good.
Cooperate against Graham.
Admit financial fraud participation.
Restitution.
No contact with Olivia, me, or restaurant except legal channels.
Melissa refused one point.
She would not admit second rope was meant for me.
Why?
Because that established premeditation involving two victims.
She claimed second rope was already in stockroom for storage.
The handwritten ultrasound destroyed that.
“BRING CLAIRE IN NEXT.”
Her handwriting.
My name.
Impossible coincidence.
She then claimed it was “dark joke.”
Prosecutor Leah Monroe did not accept.
Trial preparation continued.
Meanwhile Graham negotiated separately.
He offered to plead to wire fraud and conspiracy to obstruct internal investigation, but denied responsibility for physical assault.
Federal prosecutors did not need him to admit direct assault if evidence did not prove it.
They focused on what did.
$588,000? Need total. We established total 684k, Melissa 96, Graham mostly maybe 426, 162 Bellweather service. Let's set direct fraud loss ultimately $684k unauthorized; Graham personally benefited $426k; Melissa $96k; $162k unauthorized Bellweather-related consulting/deposit but Bellweather acted mostly in good faith and returned portion. Fine.
Recovery:
Bank freezes.
Brokerage.
Melissa assets.
Graham accounts.
Bellweather voluntarily returns unearned retainers $104k after learning source questionable.
Net loss reduced.
Company insurance covers some.
No magical full instant recovery.
Samantha said final exposure could be under $150,000 after recoveries, legal fees excluded.
Ethan:
“I thought they were destroying company.”
“They damaged controls. Company itself is strong.”
Good.
Then another discovery.
Thomas Carter had questioned Graham before he died.
An old email recovered from archive.
Thomas:
Graham, Blue Arc charge duplicated?
Graham:
Correction next month.
Thomas:
Make sure. I don’t want family vendors buried in ops.
Date:
Three years earlier.
Blue Arc existed before Thomas died.
Graham’s scheme began earlier.
Did Thomas know more?
His files included handwritten note:

He died before implementing.
Ethan read note.
Cried.

“He warned himself.”

“I still trusted Graham completely.”
That was true.
The scheme exploited inherited trust.
Another family legacy.
Not dramatic secret letter with all answers.
Just one note that showed Thomas had noticed risk.
Then prosecutors recovered an email from Melissa to Graham two years earlier:
Dad was always suspicious of you.
Graham:
He was suspicious of everybody.
Melissa:
Not me.
Graham:
Exactly why you’re useful.
That line finally showed what Graham thought of her.
