Chapter 19 - Olivia Goes Back

Olivia returned to Carter House when Sophie was six months old.

Not for dinner.

During afternoon.

Empty dining room.

She stood outside service corridor.

“I can’t.”

“You don’t have to.”

“I want to.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m tired of taking long way around building in my head.”

We walked.

Ethan offered to come.

She said no.

Me.

Only me.

At stockroom threshold, Olivia froze.

Door had been replaced.

Wide window panel.

No lock.

Inside:

Wall shelves.

Flour containers.

Boxes.

Metal serving trays.

Ordinary.

She stepped.

Her breathing changed.

I did not touch her.

“Do you want hand?”

“Yes.”

She took mine.

We stood.

“This is where…”

“Yes.”

“No.”

She shook head.

“I don’t want narrate.”

“Okay.”

She looked upward.

Ceiling rack gone.

“Good.”

“Yes.”

Then at floor.

“Tile?”

“Same.”

She nodded.

We stayed two minutes.

Then she left.

Outside she cried.

Not collapse.

Release? Maybe that's cliché. She just cried.

“Want home?”

“Yes.”

We went.

She never needed to enter again for months.

Later it became easier.

No triumph speech.

Exposure only works when chosen.

At home Sophie crawled toward Olivia.

Olivia scooped her up.

“That was worth it.”

“What?”

“Coming back to this.”

She kissed Sophie.

Not stockroom story.

Home.

Ethan and Olivia renewed wedding vows? Too cliché. No.

They continued marriage.

More honest.

Ethan sold his dark green? irrelevant.

Claire? me, started dating? Not necessary.

My life should have closure too.

I had become permanent general manager and minority beneficiary of employee trust over time. Maybe after 5 years I vest small 2%? Could be. But not needed.

My lip scar faded.

I kept safety cutter on apron.

Not because trauma.

Because boxes.

One staff joke:

“Claire still dangerous with office supplies.”

I answered:

“Only cardboard.”

We laughed.

Then the restaurant received final media request for anniversary.

We declined.

No documentary.

No viral interview.

Olivia especially refused.

“She doesn’t get to become content.”

Good.

Sophie would grow without Google being narrated by us.

Then a letter arrived from court.

Graham’s appeal.

One sentencing enhancement vacated due technical issue.

Remand for resentencing.

Ethan panicked.

“Does that mean new trial?”

“No.”

“Could he get out?”

“Eventually, like every sentence.”

At resentencing, term reduced by eight months.

Core convictions affirmed.

No new trial.

Final after appeal deadline.

Closed.

The law’s ending was less dramatic than beginning.

Fine.

Melissa’s sentence had several years remaining.

No pending appeal.

Her financial restitution continued from buyout funds.

No contact order permanent for duration plus civil protection long-term.

Olivia could petition change someday.

She had no plan.

Then our attorney notified:

Harbor Ridge loan fully satisfied from Melissa buyout.

No creditor claim on Carter House.

Property title clean.

Another thread closed.

That left one thing.

May you like

The ultrasound.

Olivia still had it.
