Chapter 15 - Thirty Three Weeks

Olivia entered thirty three weeks pregnant the week Graham was convicted.
She hated when people described her as “strong.”
“I’m tired.”
“Strong people get tired.”
“Stop motivational postering me.”
Fair.
She attended prenatal appointments.
Growth appropriate.
Blood pressure watched.
No major complications identified.
She still had numbness in part of one ankle from soft tissue injury? Could be plausible but avoid medical certainty. Let's say bruising resolved; some soreness treated with physical therapy.
Her legs healed.
Sleep took longer.
Nightmares:
Door locked.
Ceiling moving.
Melissa’s hand.
My blood on tray.
Trauma therapist, Dr. Mara Quinn, helped with grounding.
Olivia stopped sleeping with hallway light on after several weeks.
Then started again after Graham trial.
Healing is not linear.
Ethan struggled with guilt.
He asked therapist:
“If I had removed Melissa after Thanksgiving, this wouldn’t happen.”
Maybe.
Maybe not.
Counterfactuals can become punishment.
Olivia told him:
“I need you to admit you failed without making me comfort you.”
That was sharp.
He learned.
“I failed to protect boundaries.”
“Yes.”
“I brought her back because family pressure felt easier than your fear.”
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Okay.”
No automatic forgiveness.
Their marriage survived because Ethan stopped demanding recovery schedule.
He moved his home office out of restaurant.
He attended every appointment Olivia wanted.
Not every appointment by default.
She chose.
Control restored in small ways.
At Carter House, civil valuation of Melissa’s forty percent began.
Operating agreement clause required:
Final finding of fraud against company.
Independent appraisal.
Deduction only for legally determined damages/restitution attributable to her.
No punitive forfeiture.
Melissa’s attorneys argued her shares should be valued before scandal depressed business.
Ethan’s argued current fair market value.
Appraisers compromised using normalized earnings excluding fraud/scandal temporary effects.
Valuation of entire operating company:
$2.6 million.
Melissa’s 40%:
$1.04 million before discounts/adjustments.
Her share of property LLC separate:
Building valued $3.9 million net debt $1.1 million, equity $2.8 million; 40% $1.12 million.
Combined roughly $2.16 million before lack-of-control discount and damages.
Ethan did not have cash to buy outright.
A bank could finance if restaurant stable.
Harbor Ridge held claim on Melissa’s distributions.
Restitution also.
The court and creditors would need coordinate.
Samuel Price said:
“This will take months.”
“Fine.”
“You want her gone now.”
“Yes.”
“Law doesn’t care about your emotional calendar.”
Everyone around us loved saying things like that.
We entered mediation.
Melissa participated remotely from custody.
She wanted cash.
Ethan wanted control.
Harbor Ridge wanted debt.
Government wanted restitution.
Final structure:
Ethan and a new employee ownership trust? Could be interesting. Maybe Ethan buys through bank and offers Claire small equity? But user doesn't ask. Let's keep simple:
Ethan buys Melissa's operating and property interests through financed buyout at agreed $1.82M after discounts.
Proceeds first to Harbor Ridge, restitution, taxes, remaining held for Melissa.
Carter House becomes fully Ethan-owned (with Olivia? Could transfer some to management trust later).
Need not happen yet.
Then at 34 weeks, Olivia received envelope from evidence unit.
Not actual ultrasound, because retained until appeal. A digital copy authorized.
She stared at image.
“Why send?”
Victim advocate said she requested property return later, not now. Let's not.
Instead, police asked whether original ultrasound was needed for prosecution; yes.
No action.
Good.
Then I got call from storage/restaurant.
A contractor replacing ceiling rack found something.
Not another rope.
A small black USB taped above beam.
I groaned.
“Do not touch.”
Police came.
Forensics.
What was it?
Graham’s backup?
Could be too much/new twist. We already have one major twist. But chapters need cliffhanger. Let's make it old security config backup that reveals no new mastermind but strengthens case? Graham already convicted. Maybe unnecessary.
Instead contractor found a tiny audio recorder. Was it Melissa's? Could record incident. That would add evidence but late. Could be prepared by Graham to record coerced confessions. This is logical! He wanted signed statements and audio confession. A recorder taped above rack, set to sound activation. It may contain Olivia refusing, Melissa threats, maybe Graham not present. This can give closure. Need not reopen case because appeals.
Forensics recovered audio.
Melissa:
“Say Claire did it.”
Olivia:
“No.”
Melissa:
“Then Claire comes in here too.”
Olivia:
“You’re insane.”
Melissa:
“Graham said all I need is both signatures.”
Then later:
“Don’t make me use the second one.”
That clearly proved second rope intended for Claire.
Melissa had already admitted.
But hearing Olivia’s resistance mattered.
At end, faint beep and Melissa speaking to someone on phone:
“They’ll both sign before Ethan gets here.”
Male voice too faint for identity.
Not needed.
Graham's conviction on appeal? Could support.
We had enough.
May you like
The recorder was not mysterious new villain.
Just final witness from room.
