Chapter 20 - The Photograph

Sophie turned one.
Cake everywhere.
Olivia laughed when frosting landed on ceiling? Maybe too much. Let's keep.
Small backyard party.
No restaurant.
No Melissa.
Ethan’s few extended relatives invited only if supportive.
No Graham obviously.
Olivia handed me an envelope after guests left.
“Open.”
I knew.
Ultrasound.
Front:
Sophie at twenty nine weeks? She was seven months, maybe around 30 weeks.
Name:
OLIVIA BENNETT.
Date.
Back:
BRING CLAIRE IN NEXT.
Black ink.
I stared.
“What do you want?”
“I don’t know.”
“Keep?”
“I don’t want threat in Sophie’s baby book.”
“Then don’t.”
“Destroy?”
“Your choice.”
She sat.
“I thought I needed to reclaim it.”
“Maybe reclaiming means choosing not to keep.”
She nodded.
Then:
“Can evidence copy remain?”
“Yes. Case archive.”
“I don’t need original.”
We did not burn it dramatically.
We shredded paper? But it had emotional value. Could perhaps crop/scan front then destroy back. Olivia scanned front at high quality, saved to baby archive. Then cut original through threatening words and discarded. But user prefers action. Let's do:
We scanned front.
Printed new clean copy.
Olivia held original over shredder.
Then stopped.
“Too cinematic.”
I laughed.
She tore it once.
Then again.
Put in trash.
That was all.
The image remained digitally as Sophie’s prenatal photo.
Threat did not.
Evidence copy remained with case archive per retention.
Good.
Ethan entered.
“What did I miss?”
“Nothing.”
Olivia smiled.
“Exactly.”
Sophie screamed from high chair.
Normal.
Later, Carter House employee trust vested first units.
I received a modest participation percentage, not controlling.
Kitchen staff profit-sharing pool.
No family-only business.
Ethan said:
“Dad would hate this.”
I looked.
He grinned.
“Kidding. He probably should’ve done it.”
Thomas’s portrait still hung near bar.
We had considered removing.
Didn’t.
He founded place.
His children’s failures didn’t erase that.
History without worship.
Then an accountant reviewing Thomas’s estate found one last old note? We don't need new twist. No.
Instead, chapter ends with Olivia receiving a voicemail from prison? No contact. Avoid new secret.
Need cliffhanger to next: Melissa eligible for first parole review? Virginia abolished parole for many. Better not. She is in federal/state, no parole. Could be "Melissa requested restorative justice conference." That becomes choice.
Through victim services, Melissa asked whether Olivia and I would consider a restorative justice letter exchange near midpoint of sentence.
No effect on sentence.
Voluntary.
I said no.
Olivia surprised me.
“Maybe.”
“Why?”
“I want to ask one question.”
“What?”
May you like
“Why did she hate me more than Graham?”
That question carried us next.
