Chapter 7 - Lucas’s Phone
Lucas’s first interview lasted six hours.
I was not there.
I read summary later.
He did not become honest immediately.
First hour:
The vendors were legitimate.
Second:
The power of attorney was a misunderstanding.
Third:
The resignation was a planning draft.
Then federal agents played his own recordings.
Lucas stopped.
His attorney asked for break.
Afterward, story changed.
Margaret had originated control plan.
He had executed.
That was convenient.
Investigators pushed.
Who created Lark?
Lucas.
Who approved invoice?
Lucas.
Who copied my signature?
Lucas admitted downloading signature source.
Who inserted?
A paralegal at outside firm? Wait earlier metadata from Lucas workstation. Let's make Lucas himself inserted the image with help from template. He admitted.
Who instructed notary?
Lucas.
Who created resignation?
Lucas.
Who formed Carter Continuity?
Lucas.
Not mother alone.
Then why?
He cried.
“I worked there every day.”
That sentence.
He believed labor entitled him to control.
“I gave company my twenties while Daniel got fifty two percent for wearing uniform.”
The bitterness.
Then:
“Mom said Dad never meant Daniel to hold forever.”
Did Margaret have evidence?
“No.”
Then:
“She said Daniel would eventually give.”
Eventually.
Again.
Then why Elena?
Lucas looked ashamed.
“She saw folder.”
“What folder?”
“Transaction packet.”
Then:
“Mom wanted her quiet.”
“Did you physically hurt Elena?”
“No.”
Did he touch?
Elena had not reported Lucas striking her, but he blocked doors, took phone, filmed.
He admitted taking phone.
Admitted standing in doorway.
Admitted mocking.
Then:
“Did you know Margaret had grabbed or shoved Elena before Thursday?”
“Yes.”
“Did you intervene?”
“No.”
Then basin.
“Whose idea?”
“Mom.”
“Why film?”
He cried.
“Because we were making fun.”
Cruelty without strategic purpose.
Not everything was scheme.
Some was simply enjoyment of hierarchy.
Then:
“Why say Friday first?”
“Because deal.”
Then Lucas admitted forced statement.
Margaret drafted.
He printed.
They told Elena if she signed, family problem ended.
If not, they would report suspicious spending to Daniel and his command.
They had no actual evidence of wrongdoing.
Then the shell vendors.
Lark was controlled through Margaret’s acquaintance.
Northbridge through Lucas friend.
Meridian through lawyer nominee.
Services mostly fake.
Some minor deliverables created after questions arose.
Fraud.
Then $684,213.
Lucas personally received about $103,000 indirectly.
Margaret around $270,000 direct/personal.
Rest paid deal advisers, legal fees, Continuity escrow, and other costs.
He admitted knowing company money paid.
Then federal contract cost allocation.
He claimed he did not understand implications.
Perhaps true partly.
CFO would testify Lucas knew vendor expenses were coded corporate overhead.
That was enough for false records, possibly federal claims.
Then Alder transaction.
Lucas believed buyer would eventually discover family dispute but not forgery.
He thought once signed it would be too expensive to unwind.
Same logic.
Then the mansion.
Carter Continuity plan did not legally own home.
But Margaret intended after company control to pressure trust administrators to consolidate residence and convert into corporate hospitality property.
Then Elena and I could be “offered” another home.
Margaret wanted mansion back.
Her word.
Back.
Though she never owned outright.
Then Agent Sloan asked:
“What did Margaret mean when she said Daniel always chooses family?”
Lucas answered:
“He always fixes things.”
That hurt.
“He fixed my DUI when I was twenty one.”
Not literally made charges disappear? Need careful. We can say I paid lawyer and helped him complete program. Fine.
“He paid after my first startup loss.”
“He let Mom stay after she insulted Elena.”
“He always comes around.”
There.
I had built expectation.
Then cooperation deal.
Lucas would plead to conspiracy, wire fraud, falsification/identity related offenses, and cooperate regarding Margaret.
Sentencing credit possible.
No immunity.
He still faced prison.
Then he gave investigators one more thing.
A voice memo.
Recorded accidentally? Maybe intentionally for notes.
Margaret speaking.
“Daniel will never prosecute his mother. Elena will cry. He’ll send her mother money, he’ll pay the company back, and he’ll call it family.”
I listened.
Cold.
That was exactly the man she believed I was.
A repairman for consequences.
Then:
“If he gets angry, remind him what his father wanted.”
Lucas:
“What if he sees signature?”
Margaret:
“He’ll be furious for a week.”
Then:
“He always forgives blood.”
I closed audio.
Elena sat beside.
“What are you thinking?”
“That I trained them.”
“No.”
She took my hand.
“You trained soldiers.”
Then:
“You enabled family.”
Difference.
Then:
“Stop making their crimes into your character flaw.”
I looked.
“Therapy taught you that?”
“Yes.”
She had started seeing a counselor after hospital.
Good.
Then she added:
“You still owe me change.”
“I know.”
That was right too.
Then state authorities charged Margaret with misdemeanor assault and coercion related offenses? The abuse included forced servitude and physical contact. Could be battery, unlawful restraint perhaps depending. Prosecutors considered felony intimidation due connection to fraud.
Federal prosecutors now had financial conspiracy.
The case was growing.
Then Margaret made her first public move.
Through attorney, she denied everything.
She said Lucas had acted alone.
She said Elena fabricated abuse because she wanted Margaret removed from family home.
She said I had become emotionally compromised by my wife.
Then she filed a civil petition challenging modification of her residence rights.
