Chapter 10 - Margaret’s Version

Margaret surrendered through counsel.
No raid.
No screaming arrest.
She wore cream suit and sunglasses.
News cameras waited because Carter Industrial was large local employer and I was a senior Army officer.
I hated it.
My command communications office said:
“No comment beyond this being private legal matter unrelated to Army duties.”
Good.
Carter Industrial issued:
The company is cooperating with authorities. Operations continue normally.
No family defense.
Then bond.
Margaret had no prior criminal record.
Age sixty six.
Community ties.
Judge released on secured bond with travel restrictions and no contact with Elena, me, Lucas except through counsel as needed, and certain witnesses.
No prison before conviction.
Reasonable.
Then her attorneys constructed version.
Lucas acted independently.
He forged documents because he feared losing role.
Margaret received transfers believing they were lawful family reimbursements and consulting distributions.
Carter Continuity existed for estate planning, not takeover.
Elena was emotionally unstable and had exaggerated household conflicts.
The power of attorney?
Margaret claimed she believed I signed.
The resignation?
She never saw.
The voice memos?
Taken out of context.
“Daniel always forgives blood” was about family disagreement, not crime.
Then Keep her scared until Friday.
She claimed scare meant “convince Elena not to interfere with business matters she did not understand.”
Not good.
Then basin.
She said Elena volunteered to wash feet as part of apology after argument.
Lucas video showed foot on shoulder.
Margaret claimed playful.
Her lawyer had difficult job.
Then state prosecutor offered plea package coordinated with federal case.
Margaret rejected.
She believed Lucas would fall apart as witness.
Maybe.
Then Lucas entered guilty plea.
He admitted conspiracy.
Wire fraud.
Forgery related conduct.
Obstruction through false documents.
He would receive sentence later after cooperation.
At plea hearing judge asked:
“Did your mother force you?”
“No.”
Good.
“Did she direct some conduct?”
“Yes.”
“Were you capable of refusing?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Why did you participate?”
Lucas cried.
“I wanted company.”
There.
No inheritance word.
Company.
Then:
“Did Colonel Carter authorize?”
“No.”
“Did Elena Carter steal funds?”
“No.”
That cleared public record.
Then media.
Headlines:
Carter Brother Admits Fraud.
I did not celebrate.
Lucas was my brother.
My mother facing trial.
Elena pregnant.
No winner.
Then private investor Alder Ridge sued no one? They incurred expenses. They negotiated release with Carter Industrial; both sides walked.
No transaction.
No conspiracy with buyer.
Good.
Then Carter Continuity dissolved under court supervision after forfeiture of traceable funds.
No hidden empire.
Then Margaret’s home allowance.
Trust paid for a high end condominium lease.
She complained through lawyers it was “beneath her standard.”
Trustee responded budget matched original occupancy benefit.
No more.
Then a letter from Margaret arrived through attorney.
Daniel,
You have always been dramatic when it comes to Elena.
I stopped.
Handed back.
“No.”
Aaron asked:
“Do you want future letters screened?”
“Yes.”
Only accountability.
No blame.
Then a second months later.
Son,
Lucas has destroyed this family.
No.
Third.
I made mistakes, but prison would kill me.
That one hurt.
She was my mother.
I pictured her older.
Afraid.
Then Elena said:
“You can feel sorry.”
I looked.
“Does that hurt you?”
“No.”
Then:
“If feeling sorry makes you lie, then it hurts.”
Good.
We could separate compassion from interference.
Then prosecutor asked for my testimony.
I would need explain trust.
Forged signature.
No authorization.
Simple.
Elena would testify state assault and federal coercion context.
She was seven months pregnant during events, but trial would occur after birth due schedules.
Good.
No courtroom while heavily pregnant if avoid.
Then baby came early.
Not dangerously.
At thirty seven weeks and two days, Elena’s water broke.
Every legal problem vanished from brain.
We drove hospital.
Labor fourteen hours.
Owen Richard Carter entered world screaming.
Elena laughed.
I cried.
Our son healthy.
Margaret learned through her attorney? We did not announce to her.
She had no right.
Then three days after birth, a package arrived.
No return address.
Security screened.
Inside:
A silver baby cup engraved CARTER.
From Margaret.
No note.
Elena stared.
“What do we do?”
I asked:
“Do you want?”
“No.”
We returned through attorney.
Not punishment.
Boundary.
May you like
The first object my mother tried to give our son came with his last name carved larger than his first.
We were not starting that lesson again.
