Chapter 19 - Margaret Comes Home

The first time I met my mother after prison, it was not at our house.

A church counseling center.

Neutral.

Elena did not come.

Owen was six.

I was forty six.

Margaret was seventy three.

She walked with a cane because of arthritis.

No luxury armor.

Simple navy dress.

She saw me.

Cried.

“Daniel.”

“Mom.”

She opened arms halfway.

Then stopped.

“Can I?”

I nodded.

She hugged.

I felt like child and witness at same time.

Then we sat.

Counselor asked:

“What do you hope?”

Margaret said:

“To know my son.”

Not:

Get family back.

Good.

I said:

“To see whether relationship is possible without control.”

Then silence.

I asked:

“Why Elena?”

She cried.

“Because you loved her.”

Not enough.

Then:

“I thought she replaced me.”

There.

“Why company?”

“Because Richard left you what I believed Lucas deserved.”

“Why forge me?”

“I thought you would stop us.”

“Yes.”

She almost smiled through tears.

“Yes.”

Then:

“Why money?”

“To make plan happen.”

“Did you know stealing?”

She looked down.

“Yes.”

No more efficiency.

Then:

“Why basin?”

Her face broke.

“Because I hated that she saw me.”

“What?”

“She found document.”

Then:

“And because I wanted her to feel small.”

There.

No scheme excuse.

Cruelty.

Then I asked:

“Did you love her?”

“No.”

“At all?”

“I loved what she gave you.”

What?

“Home.”

Then:

“And I resented her for it.”

Complex.

Then:

“Do you love Owen?”

“I don’t know him.”

Best answer.

“I feel love for idea.”

She caught herself.

“That is what got me into trouble.”

Yes.

Then:

“Do you expect meet?”

“No.”

“Want?”

“Yes.”

Honest.

Then I said:

“Elena decides with me.”

She nodded.

No insult.

That was new.

Then after meeting I told Elena everything.

She listened.

“Do you want her meet Owen?”

“Maybe.”

“Me?”

“I want you never pressured.”

She thought.

Then:

“I need meet her first.”

Her choice.

Three months later.

Same center.

I attended but sat farther.

Margaret faced Elena.

“I am sorry.”

Elena said:

“I know.”

Then:

“No, I need specific.”

Margaret nodded.

“I put my foot on you.”

“I grabbed you.”

“I took your phone with Lucas.”

“I forced you to sign a lie.”

“I told you the house was not yours.”

“I tried to use your fear to keep Daniel from stopping us.”

Then:

“I enjoyed humiliating you.”

Elena cried.

Margaret too.

Then:

“I am sorry.”

Elena asked:

“Why did you send baby cup?”

Margaret looked ashamed.

“I still thought Carter name gave me claim.”

Then:

“Do you now?”

“No.”

Then Elena said:

“I forgive you.”

I looked.

She continued:

“I do not trust you.”

Important.

Margaret nodded.

“I understand.”

Then:

“You will not be alone with Owen.”

“I understand.”

“You do not talk to him about company, inheritance, or what belongs to Carters.”

“I understand.”

“Gifts only if we approve.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“And if he does not want hug?”

“I ask.”

Elena exhaled.

“Then we can try.”

No redemption spectacle.

A controlled chance.

First meeting with Owen at botanical garden.

Margaret introduced as Grandma Margaret.

He knew.

He asked:

“Did you go jail?”

She froze.

Elena and I had told age appropriate truth.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I stole money and hurt your mom.”

Simple.

“Did you say sorry?”

“Yes.”

He looked at Elena.

She nodded.

Then Owen:

“Okay.”

Children move.

He wanted see turtles.

Margaret followed.

No claim.

At goodbye she asked hug.

Owen said:

“High five.”

She accepted.

That was the first test.
