Three years after the original night, company counsel called.
My stomach immediately tightened.
“Andrew, before you panic, this is administrative.”
“Great opening.”
“The federal case evidence retention period is closing on certain copied materials. We’re reviewing whether there are any unresolved files you need preserved.”
“Anything new?”
“One folder was never fully explained.”
I hated that.
“Which?”
A document in Natalie’s Carter Exit Plan directory:

I had assumed it was empty.
It wasn’t.
A forensic recovery found a deleted note:
After Richard gets proxy:
Halt audit.
Pay back NRC from personal credit line.
Sell Westerville interest to Carter Sentinel.
Restore company before Andrew knows.
Tell Clara she can come home after she apologizes.
I stared.
No plan to permanently steal my company.
Natalie thought she could take money, temporarily cover it, use Dad’s rescue transaction, then put everything back.
Like borrowing without permission.
Like Mom’s old family logic.
Take now.
Restore later.
Nobody hurt if account ends whole.
That was the final twist.
Not bigger criminal mastermind.
A family philosophy.
Natalie had applied the same rule to everything.
Money.
House.
Clara’s autonomy.
Toby’s food.
My authority.
Take what you need.
Return something later.
Call it family.
I finally understood why none of them initially saw themselves as thieves.
They did not believe boundaries inside family were real.
That insight did not excuse.
It explained.
I told counsel:
“Preserve the note with closed case file.”
“Done.”
No new charge.
No reopened conspiracy.
