Chapter 22 - Evelyn’s Choice
Evelyn had never been charged.
She sometimes treated that as vindication.
Then one day she stopped.
I do not know what changed.
Maybe mediation.
Maybe loneliness.
Maybe seeing Richard rebuild without her.
She sent Clara a letter.
Not to me.
Dear Clara,
I spent months saying Natalie manipulated me. She did. That does not explain why manipulation worked.
I read only because Clara allowed.
Evelyn continued:
She told me you looked down on me. I believed her because I already resented you. She told me Andrew would abandon us. I believed her because I had never accepted that a son building his own family is not abandonment.
Then:
I knew you were frightened. I kept going because frightening you made me feel powerful in a house that was never mine.
Clara stopped reading.
Two days later she finished.
The final line:
I will not ask to see the children. If they ever ask to see me, I will follow your rules.
Clara said:
“That’s the first useful thing she’s done.”
We did nothing.
No immediate reunion.
A year later, Toby asked about Grandma.
Not because letter.
Because school grandparents day.
“Do I have one?”
“Yes.”
“Can she come?”
Clara and I discussed.
Then said no that year.
He accepted.
