Chapter 21 - Richard Comes Home
Dad completed his custodial sentence.
He did not return to Evelyn.
Their marriage had not survived.
They filed for divorce during his incarceration.
Not because criminal case automatically destroyed them.
Because the lies beneath it became impossible to ignore.
Richard moved into a one bedroom apartment.
He sold his interest in the failed development.
Lost money.
Paid restitution.
Retirement became modest.
He asked for no help from me.
That surprised me.
Then he mailed a birthday card to Toby through Laura.
No request.
Just:
Happy seventh birthday. I am sorry I made your home feel unsafe. I hope you are happy.
We let Toby read.
He asked:
“Can I write thank you?”
“Yes.”
“Does that mean Grandpa comes over?”
“No.”
“Okay.”
He wrote:
Thank you. I like second grade.
That was all.
Richard cried when he received it, according to Laura.
Not our burden.
Months later, Toby asked to meet Grandpa for ice cream.
Clara hesitated.
I did too.
Therapist suggested a short supervised public meeting if Toby genuinely wanted.
We agreed.
Richard arrived early.
He did not hug until Toby did.
He never asked to see Lucy.
Not that day.
