Chapter 9 - Adrian Is Investigated

Internal affairs interviewed me eleven hours across three days.

They did not treat me like victim only.

Good.

Questions:

Had I ever given Miles passwords?

No.

Shared access?

Not intentionally.

Used home workstation outside policy?

Yes, within authorized remote setup.

Left authenticated?

Yes.

Had I discussed Harbor Crest with Margaret?

No.

With Elena?

Only broad work stress, no confidential details.

Had I invested in Vantage?

No.

Did I know Margaret did?

No.

Could she have overheard calls?

Possibly.

That answer hurt.

I had sometimes worked from living room while she visited.

Then the policy violation.

I failed to log one working spreadsheet version.

Why?

Deadline.

No data alteration.

Still violation.

Then computer review confirmed.

No evidence I knowingly leaked information.

No unexplained money.

Bank records clean.

No contact with Harbor Crest outside authorized.

Then one embarrassing item.

Miles had messaged me eight months earlier:

Your mom is funny. She thinks Elena controls you.

I replied:

She thinks everyone controls me if it isn't her.

I knew dynamic.

Then Miles:

Want me to talk her down next time?

I responded:

Be my guest.

That message devastated me.

Not because illegal.

Because I had implicitly given Miles permission to become involved in family boundary I should have handled myself.

I never meant months of manipulation.

Still.

I gave opening.

Elena read in discovery.

She asked:

“Why would you ask colleague to deal with your mother?”

“I thought joke.”

“That’s your answer too often.”

She was right.

Then internal affairs cleared me of corruption and intentional evidence compromise.

I received formal reprimand for remote-documentation lapse and security complacency.

No termination.

But Harbor Crest stayed with clean team.

I would not return to lead.

That hurt.

Two years work.

Gone.

Director Bennett said:

“Case is bigger than your ownership.”

Yes.

Same lesson family.

Nothing belongs because you built.

Then I returned to bureau in another unit after paternity leave.

Eventually.

But first, home.

Elena did not trust me fully.

Reasonable.

We began couples therapy with Dr. Hannah Morris.

First session:

Elena:

“I’m not sure Adrian understands his mother abused me before he saw it.”

I said:

“I do.”

She shook head.

“You understand after evidence.”

That landed.

She had told me.

I had treated each incident as isolated.

Why?

Because recognizing pattern would require confronting mother.

I had avoided.

Then therapist:

“Adrian, your fraud work depends on pattern recognition.”

“Yes.”

“Why did you not apply at home?”

I stared at floor.

“Bias.”

Simplest.

I believed mother fundamentally safe.

So evidence against her needed higher threshold.

Elena got opposite presumption.

That was unfair.

Then I apologized without “but.”

“I’m sorry I made you collect four hundred twelve notes to be believed.”

Elena cried.

Then:

“I don't know if I forgive.”

“You don't have to yet.”

Good.

Then baby kicked.

We both laughed through tears.

Life.

Then Margaret was arrested formally.

Charges:

Aggravated assault of pregnant Elena? Depending injury minor but pregnant victim enhancement. Let's say felony domestic assault causing bodily injury/attempted coercion.

Witness intimidation/coercion.

Unauthorized computer access facilitation/conspiracy? Evidence she knowingly inserted USB without authorization but not knew malware. Prosecutors charged criminal facilitation of unauthorized computer access maybe too technical. Better: unlawful entry/use of protected computer? She physically inserted device. Intent uncertain. Could plead later to evidence tampering/false statement.

Filing false sworn statements.

Witness intimidation.

She surrendered.

No dramatic handcuffs at house.

Her attorney arranged.

The next time I saw my mother, she was sitting behind defense table.

And Elena was the person prosecutors called the victim.
