Chapter 17 - Lily Learns the Truth

Lily was fourteen when she asked why Margaret had been in prison.
Not “away.”
Prison.
She heard cousin? We have no cousin. Internet search perhaps. Our family surname public due Miles case. She found article.
We decided full, age-appropriate.
Elena and I together.
Margaret knew ahead.
Lily read nothing graphic.
We explained.
Miles Grant.
Harbor Crest.
Forged messages.
Margaret’s cooperation.
USB.
False documents.
Assault.
Threat.
Prison.
Lily stared.
“Grandma wanted me?”
“Yes,” Elena said.
“In a creepy way?”
We almost laughed.
“Possessive,” I said.
Then:
“Did she want Mom dead?”
“No evidence of that.”
“Did Miles?”
“No evidence he planned to kill. He threatened because he wanted me scared.”
“Then why say survive?”
“To frighten.”
She frowned.
“That’s still insane.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Did Mom almost lose me?”
No.
The pregnancy had remained viable.
“There were risks after assault, but doctors never found injury to you from it.”
Important.
Then:
“Why did Grandma think she could take me?”
Elena:
“Because she believed false papers and family pressure gave her more power than they actually did.”
“So court wouldn’t just give me?”
“No.”
Good.
Then Lily asked Margaret directly later.
“Did you want to be my mom?”
Margaret cried.
“I wanted to be the person Adrian needed to raise you if Elena was gone.”
“That sounds like yes.”
“For a time, yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I confused being important with being loved.”
Lily stared.
Then:
“Do you still?”
“No.”
“Good.”
No hug.
Then:
“Do you forgive yourself?”
Margaret:
“Some days.”
Lily:
“Mom forgave you?”
Elena:
“Some.”
Different.
Then Lily asked me:
“Did you forgive Miles?”
No.
I had not considered.
He was still incarcerated, now in later years.
I said:
“I don't know him enough anymore to make forgiveness useful.”
Then:
“Do I need?”
“No.”
Children do not inherit emotional homework.
Then Lily searched case online herself.
Read about bureau corruption.
She saw my name as “investigator compromised through family access.”
That embarrassed.
She asked:
“Were you bad at job?”
I laughed.
“I made mistakes.”
“Did you get fired?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Investigation found I wasn't corrupt, but I was disciplined for security lapse.”
Good.
No hero myth.
Then:
“Mom saved your career?”
I looked at Elena.
“In part.”
Elena said:
“I saved myself first.”
Correct.
Then Lily smiled.
May you like
“Mom is cooler.”
She always knew.
