Chapter 8 - The Empty Bassinet

The fire alarm was false.
Smoke had been released from a maintenance closet to force an evacuation.
Hospital staff began moving patients toward protected stairwells. Security officers entered our room and formed a barrier around Maya and Liam.
Then the power failed.
Emergency lights turned the corridor red.
A nurse approached with an identification badge and claimed Liam had to be moved to a secure neonatal unit.
Maya recognized her voice.
She was the woman who had tried to remove him earlier.
The nurse pushed the empty bassinet toward us.
I stepped in front of it.
“Show me the transfer order.”
She reached beneath the blanket.
Detective Ortiz grabbed her arm.
A syringe fell onto the floor.
The woman tried to run, but two officers restrained her.
Her real name was Rachel Ames. She had worked for the Metropolitan Children’s Center for six years.
Police recovered a phone from her pocket.
The latest message read:
Secure the infant before 6:00. Reed will validate placement afterward.
Judge Reed was directing the operation.
But another message had been deleted.
Technicians restored part of it.
Do not let Evelyn’s son discover what his father did with the first child.
“The first child?” Maya whispered.
Arthur’s face changed.
My father’s trust was created fifteen years earlier, long before Maya and I met.
It referred to the birth of Ethan’s first child.
Why would my father create a trust for a grandchild who did not exist?
Unless he believed one already did.
I had been nineteen when the trust was signed.
I had never fathered a child.
At least not knowingly.
Evelyn called from detention.
She demanded to speak with me without attorneys.
I accepted the call.
“Did Dad believe I had another child?”
My mother closed her eyes.
“I tried to keep this from you.”
“That is not an answer.”
“When you were nineteen, you dated a girl named Natalie Reed.”
I remembered her.
Natalie was Judge Reed’s daughter. We dated for six months before she disappeared from college. Her family said she entered treatment overseas.
Evelyn told me Natalie never wanted to see me again.
“She was pregnant,” Evelyn said.
The room tilted.
“What happened to the baby?”
“Your father arranged everything.”
“What does that mean?”
“He said you were too young. He said the child would destroy your future.”
“Where is my child?”
Evelyn’s composure broke.
“I do not know.”
Judge Reed’s involvement was not only about Liam.
His daughter had been carrying my first child.
My father created the trust out of guilt or protection.
The Metropolitan Children’s Center may have taken the baby.
Arthur searched old records and found that Natalie gave birth to a boy fourteen years earlier.
The infant was listed as stillborn.
No burial record existed.
Judge Reed sealed the file personally.
Maya held Liam against her chest.
“Your father knew.”
“Yes.”
“And Evelyn knew.”
“Yes.”
Every adult around me had treated children like assets that could be hidden, traded, or controlled.
Detective Ortiz received an update.
Judge Reed had been located at a private residence outside Manhattan.
The property belonged to the Metropolitan Children’s Center.
Police approached but found the gates locked.
Thermal imaging showed at least nine people inside.
One appeared to be a teenage boy.
Before officers entered, Judge Reed called me.
“You should have allowed your mother to complete the guardianship.”
“Where is Natalie?”
“Safe.”
“Where is my son?”
He was silent.
Then a teenage voice came through the phone.
“Who are you?”
My throat closed.
“This is Ethan.”
The boy breathed quickly.
“Judge Reed says you abandoned me.”
“I did not know you existed.”
A struggle sounded near the phone.
Judge Reed returned.
“Bring Liam’s trust documents to the center, and I will allow you to meet the boy.”
“You are surrounded by police.”
“Your father designed this property. Police will not reach us before I decide what happens to both children.”
The call ended.
At that moment, every television inside the hospital switched to a live security feed.
A teenage boy stood behind a locked glass door.
Beside him was Natalie Reed.
May you like
She was alive.
Continue to the next part: Ethan discovers that his first son and the woman he believed abandoned him have been hidden for fourteen years.
