Chapter 6 - The Husband on the Screen

The video lasted nineteen seconds.
A man wearing my face entered the nursery, struck the wall, and shouted at Maya while she protected Liam.
The angle was distant. The lighting was poor.
At first glance, it looked real.
Then Maya pointed toward the man’s left shoulder.
“You injured that shoulder in college.”
I had a slight restriction in my movement. The man in the recording raised both arms normally.
Detective Ortiz sent the clip to a forensic laboratory.
The face had been digitally altered.
The voice had been created from recordings stolen from my work presentations.
The body belonged to Victor Shaw.
Evelyn’s private investigator had not only impersonated Arthur Wells.
He had impersonated me.
The video was designed to support a criminal complaint claiming I had abused Maya and endangered Liam.
If Maya was declared unstable and I was arrested, the court could appoint an emergency guardian.
My mother would control the baby.
She would control the trust.
And she would control the company shares Liam inherited.
“This was planned before the delivery,” Detective Ortiz said.
Maya shook her head.
“Before the pregnancy.”
She remembered Evelyn asking unusual questions months earlier about fertility treatment, inheritance laws, and whether we planned to have more children.
My mother had been waiting for a grandchild because my father’s trust became active only after one was born.
Liam was not a grandson to her.
He was a key.
At eight in the morning, the hotel hearing took place through an emergency video conference.
Evelyn appeared in borrowed clothes with her attorney beside her.
She looked tired but composed.
Chloe sat separately, crying.
The prosecutor presented the bank records, security footage, forged documents, and medical evidence.
Evelyn claimed Maya had manipulated the recordings.
Then the prosecutor played the unedited video of Evelyn removing Maya’s medication.
My mother did not blink.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Ethan knows I was protecting his son.”
The judge denied bail.
For the first time, fear moved across Evelyn’s face.
Not because she was going to jail.
Because she had lost control of the story.
Chloe’s attorney requested a private meeting with investigators.
My sister was ready to cooperate.
She admitted Evelyn had promised her two hundred thousand dollars after the guardianship was approved.
Chloe believed Maya would spend several weeks in psychiatric care and then return home.
She claimed she never understood that the cold apartment and diluted formula could seriously harm Liam.
“You watched him cry,” I said when detectives allowed me to speak to her through a secure call.
Chloe covered her face.
“Mom said babies cry.”
“You watched Maya bleed.”
“She told me the surgery wound was normal.”
“You pushed her.”
“I panicked.”
“No. You made a choice.”
Chloe lowered her hands.
“There is something hidden inside Liam’s bassinet.”
“What?”
“Mom put it there after the fake attorney came.”
Police searched the bassinet at the hospital.
Beneath the wicker lining, they found a small voice recorder.
It contained hours of audio from the apartment.
Evelyn had been recording Maya, hoping to capture confusion or emotional distress.
Instead, the device captured her own conversations.
In one recording, Evelyn spoke to Robert Kline.
“Once Maya is admitted, Victor delivers the video. Ethan will be arrested before he lands.”
Robert asked what would happen to the baby.
“Liam goes to the secondary guardian.”
“I thought that was you.”
Evelyn became silent.
Then she said, “Arthur never showed me the sealed name.”
My mother had not known who would receive Liam.
She had been risking everything to activate a clause she did not fully understand.
Another voice appeared on the recording.
Doctor Cross.
“The guardian is already prepared.”
“Who?”
“You will learn after the hearing.”
The final recording ended with a fourth person entering the apartment.
A man spoke quietly.
“Evelyn, you were told not to involve Chloe.”
My mother’s voice changed.
For the first time, she sounded afraid.
The man continued.
“Liam belongs to the arrangement your husband made before he died.”
Arthur listened to the recording twice.
“I know that voice.”
“Who is it?”
He looked at me.
May you like
“It belongs to the judge who sealed the secondary guardianship document.”
Continue to the next part: The trust was designed to protect Liam from Evelyn, but the hidden guardian may be part of the same conspiracy.
