Chapter 5 - My Signature From Stuttgart

Doctor Cross stood at the nurses’ station with two private security officers.
He wore an expensive navy coat and the calm expression of a man accustomed to being obeyed.
“This is a medical matter,” he told hospital security.
I took the document from him.
My signature appeared beside a digital verification mark. The authorization had been submitted from my company account while I was in Germany.
The date was December twenty seventh.
I had been inside the Stuttgart factory for fourteen hours that day.
Only three people had access to my work laptop.
Myself.
My assistant in New York.
And the executive who sent me to Germany.
Doctor Cross looked toward Maya’s room.
“Your wife displayed paranoia before delivery.”
“She was abandoned after major surgery.”
“She accused your family of conspiring against her.”
“They were.”
He did not react.
“The court will determine that.”
Detective Ortiz arrived and ordered Doctor Cross to remain in the waiting area.
He smiled.
“You should examine the medical records before treating me like a criminal.”
The hospital records claimed Maya had reported hearing voices, threatened to jump from the apartment window, and refused to feed Liam.
None of the notes appeared in the hospital’s original electronic system.
They had been uploaded from Doctor Cross’s clinic overnight.
Maya looked at the pages.
“I never said any of this.”
Doctor Cross had treated her during pregnancy, but she stopped seeing him after he repeatedly pressured her to schedule an early delivery.
He claimed Liam was growing too large.
Her new obstetrician later found no reason for concern.
“Why did Evelyn recommend him?” I asked.
Maya stared at the forged records.
“Maybe this started before Liam was born.”
My company called shortly after sunrise.
The executive who arranged my German inspection was named Robert Kline. He had worked beside my father for fifteen years and remained close to Evelyn after his death.
Robert claimed the trip was urgent because a production line had failed.
The factory director told me something different.
The inspection could have waited until February.
Robert had insisted I travel before Christmas.
He also had administrative access to my company email.
Detective Ortiz contacted him.
Robert did not answer.
His Manhattan apartment was empty.
Building footage showed him leaving with two suitcases on December twenty eighth.
The same day my digital signature appeared on Doctor Cross’s order.
Arthur Wells returned with another document from my father’s estate.
It was a private memo written six months before his death.
Ethan,
If Robert Kline ever sends you away without a clear reason, contact Arthur before you leave. Robert has been helping Evelyn hide withdrawals from the company.
I read the line twice.
My father had tried to warn me.
Evelyn controlled the letter before it reached me.
Maya touched my arm.
“You did not know.”
“I should have asked more questions.”
“You trusted your mother.”
“That nearly killed you.”
She did not comfort me with an easy lie.
“Yes,” she said. “It did.”
The honesty was painful, but I needed it.
Police located Robert’s car inside a parking garage near the hotel where Evelyn and Chloe had celebrated.
In the trunk were blank medical forms, copies of my passport, and a device used to access my work account.
There was also a small insulated bag containing unopened infant formula.
The same brand Evelyn told me she could not afford to buy for Liam.
Robert had helped stage everything.
But the guardianship plan still contained a missing piece.
My mother could not automatically gain control of Liam’s trust merely by declaring Maya unstable.
I would remain his father.
Arthur returned to the secondary trust document.
“If Evelyn intended to manage the assets, she needed you legally removed as well.”
“How?”
“Death, incapacity, or criminal charges involving the child.”
Maya remembered something from the night before I left for Germany.
Evelyn asked her to sign a statement saying I had become angry when Liam’s room was not ready. Maya refused because the event never happened.
Chloe later photographed a broken lamp in the nursery.
They had been creating evidence against both of us.
My phone received an anonymous message.
A video showed me inside the apartment nursery.
I was shouting near Maya while she held Liam.
The clip appeared violent.
But I had never returned from Germany before New Year’s Eve.

The man in the video wore my face.
Continue to the next part: Evelyn created evidence showing Ethan inside New York while he was thousands of miles away.
