Chapter 10 - The Person Beside Liam’s Crib

Maya had not transferred the money.

She was inside a guarded hospital room when the transaction occurred.

The electronic authorization used her fingerprint, hospital identification, and voice.

Doctor Cross had collected her fingerprint during prenatal visits.

Evelyn had recorded hours of her voice.

Robert Kline had access to the company and trust systems.

The conspiracy had enough pieces to create a digital version of anyone.

The money moved through six accounts before disappearing into a private foundation.

The name of that foundation made Arthur sit down.

The Eleanor Project.

Eleanor was my mother’s first name.

Evelyn insisted she had never heard of it.

For once, I believed her.

She had been stealing from us, framing Maya, and trying to gain control of Liam. But someone had built a larger operation around her crimes.

Robert remained missing.

Victor Shaw had not been captured.

Doctor Cross had disappeared.

And the false Arthur seen inside our apartment had spoken to someone my mother feared.

Police returned Maya and Liam to a secure hospital suite.

I brought Natalie and Caleb to another protected floor.

Caleb refused to call me Dad. I did not ask him to.

He sat near the window and watched New York disappear beneath the first snow of the year.

Natalie slept after doctors removed years of unnecessary medication from her system.

Maya asked to meet Caleb.

He entered her room carefully.

Liam slept inside the bassinet.

“This is your brother,” Maya said.

Caleb looked at the baby for a long time.

“He has everything.”

The bitterness in his voice was honest.

Maya did not deny it.

“He has had eleven difficult days. You have had fourteen difficult years. Neither one of you caused what adults did.”

Caleb looked at her bruises.

“They hurt you too?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because they believed mothers were easier to control when nobody believed them.”

Caleb finally looked at Natalie through the glass wall across the corridor.

His anger softened, but it did not disappear.

That would take longer than one night.

Detective Ortiz arrived with a recovered copy of the secondary guardianship document.

Judge Reed had hidden it inside his private office.

The named guardian was not Evelyn.

It was not the Metropolitan Children’s Center.

It was Natalie Reed.

My father had intended Caleb’s mother to manage the trust if anything happened to me.

Judge Reed kept her imprisoned because her release would have ended his control.

When Liam was born, the same clause extended to him.

Natalie was now the legal backup guardian for both boys.

Someone had spent fourteen years making certain she appeared mentally incompetent.

Arthur examined the transfer to the Eleanor Project.

“The transaction required approval from the current guardian.”

“Natalie was sedated inside the center,” I said.

“Then someone forged her identity too.”

The scheme no longer depended on one person.

It depended on a system capable of manufacturing signatures, medical histories, videos, and legal authority.

At three in the morning on January second, police arrested Robert Kline at a private airport.

He carried cash and two passports.

During questioning, he admitted helping Evelyn send me to Germany.

He admitted accessing my company account.

He admitted hiring Victor Shaw.

But he denied moving the trust money.

“Who controls the Eleanor Project?” Detective Ortiz asked.

Robert stared at the table.

“Ethan’s father created it.”

“My father is dead.”

Robert looked toward the observation window.

“So I was told.”

Arthur checked the original death records.

My father died in a private clinic operated by Doctor Cross.

The body had been cremated before any family member identified it.

The death certificate was signed by Judge Reed’s medical consultant.

Every document came from the same network that had declared Natalie unstable and tried to remove Maya.

My father might have been another victim.

Or he might have been the person who built everything.

The hospital prepared to release Maya and Liam into a protected apartment.

Before leaving, Maya asked to review the security footage from the night I returned.

She wanted to understand every person who entered our home.

We watched Evelyn and Chloe leave.

We watched the false attorney arrive.

We watched Robert access the hallway camera.

Then Maya noticed something near the final timestamp.

At eleven fourteen, sixteen minutes before I opened the apartment door, a man entered through the service stairwell.

He wore hospital scrubs and a mask.

He walked directly to Liam’s bassinet.

The camera did not show his face, but it captured his left hand as he adjusted the blanket.

A gold ring covered his finger.

I recognized it.

My father wore that ring every day of my childhood.

The man placed something beneath Liam’s mattress and left.

Police searched the bassinet again.

Inside the wooden frame, they found a sealed memory device.

The first file contained records from the Eleanor Project.

The second contained a video dated the day before my father supposedly died.

My father appeared on the screen.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Ethan, Evelyn is not the person you should fear most.”

The video jumped.

A door opened behind him.

Maya entered the hospital room.

She looked younger, but it was unmistakably her.

She sat beside my father and signed a document.

Maya staggered backward from the screen.

“I never met him.”

The recording continued.

My father placed one hand over hers.

“You will forget this meeting,” he said. “Doctor Cross will make certain of it.”

The hospital lights went out.

Liam began crying inside the bassinet.

When the emergency lights returned, the security officer outside our room was unconscious.

Natalie’s room was empty.

Caleb had disappeared.

A message appeared on Maya’s phone.

Bring Liam to the Eleanor Project if you want the other boy and his mother alive.

Attached was a live image.

Natalie and Caleb sat inside a moving vehicle.

Between them was the man wearing my father’s gold ring.

He slowly removed his mask.

The video ended one second before his face was revealed.

Continue to the next part: Ethan saved Maya and Liam from his mother, but the person who engineered their suffering may be the father he buried four years earlier.
