Chapter 9 - The Woman Behind the Sterling Gates

Gunfire struck the mansion windows.
Roman’s security shutters descended while staff members moved toward protected rooms.
The waterfront estate had survived attacks before, but Senator Sterling’s men knew its defenses.
Evelyn had spent four years learning every camera angle, emergency route, and hidden entrance.
Roman watched her standing outside beside the man she called Father.
She still wore the white fur coat from the warehouse.
Adrian held the phone displaying Elena.
Nora stepped toward the screen.
“Mom!”
Elena lifted her head.
Her hair had turned partly silver. A bruise darkened one side of her face.
“Nora?”
“I’m here. Caleb is safe.”
Elena began crying.
Adrian ended the connection.
Senator Sterling’s voice came through the intercom.
“Deliver the archive and both children to the front courtyard.”
Roman answered.
“You are not leaving Baltimore alive.”
Sterling laughed.
“You still think this is Baltimore business. Half the state needs the archive buried.”
Roman’s men reported attacks at three properties across the city.
Police units loyal to Sterling blocked roads near the mansion.
Federal agents had not yet received the full evidence release.
They needed the transmitter.
Nora stood beside the archive console.
“We send everything.”
Thomas shook his head from the hospital bed.
“If you release the entire archive without Elena’s authorization, the system identifies her location to every account holder.”
The security feature had been built to prevent anyone from using Elena’s evidence without accepting responsibility for protecting her.
Releasing it would expose corruption.
It would also announce exactly where she was imprisoned.
Caleb looked at the map.
“We already know where she is.”
The signal from Annapolis had stopped.
Adrian moved her.
Roman ordered the mansion’s river tunnel opened.
He planned to send Nora, Caleb, and Thomas through the harbor while his men held the property.
Nora refused.
“They will kill Mom if we disappear.”
“They will kill you if you stay.”
“Then we make them believe they won.”
Roman studied her.
Nora proposed giving Evelyn the archive cabinets.
Not the files.
The most important evidence had already been copied into the transmitter.
They would place a tracker inside the pendant case and allow Adrian to take it to Elena.
Roman disliked every part of the plan.
“It depends on Evelyn believing she still controls the exchange,” he said.
“She believed I was only a maid.”
“She does not anymore.”
“She still believes fear makes me obedient.”
Outside, an explosion broke through the east security wall.
They had minutes.
Nora changed into a clean beige dress from the staff quarters and allowed Roman’s men to bind her wrists loosely.
Caleb remained hidden in the archive room with Thomas.
Roman walked Nora into the courtyard carrying two metal evidence cases.
Evelyn smiled when she saw them.
“Back where you belong.”
Nora kept her eyes lowered.
Roman placed the cases on the wet stone.
“Release Elena.”
Adrian led a hooded woman from the rear vehicle.
Nora’s heart pounded.
The woman’s height matched her mother.
Her hands trembled.
Evelyn held out her palm.
“The pendant.”
Nora removed the completed compass rose and placed it in Evelyn’s hand.
Evelyn examined it.
Then she slapped Nora.
Roman took one step forward.
Three rifles aimed at her chest.
Evelyn smiled.
“I wanted to do that when she first entered your house.”
Roman’s voice became quiet.
“Enjoy the memory.”
Adrian opened one evidence case.
Inside were sealed ledgers.
He nodded toward Senator Sterling.
The exchange appeared real.
The hood was removed from the prisoner.
It was not Elena.
Mrs. Adler stood beneath it, bruised but alive.
Nora cried out.
Adrian laughed.
“You believed we would bring the only witness who can destroy us?”
Evelyn raised the pendant.
A red light began blinking beneath the silver.
Her smile disappeared.
“Tracker.”
Roman fired.
The courtyard erupted.
Nora dropped while Roman’s men attacked from the river tunnel and upper windows.
Mrs. Adler crawled behind the vehicle.
Adrian seized Evelyn’s wrist.
“You brought it into the house.”
“I did not know.”
The pendant signal activated remotely.
The archive released a live location.
Not of Elena.
Of every Sterling transport vehicle.
One signal moved rapidly toward Baltimore Harbor.
Caleb appeared on Roman’s phone from the archive room.

“Uncle Roman, Mom is on a ship.”
Continue to the next part: Roman and Nora race toward the harbor while Evelyn escapes with Adrian and the final code needed to erase Elena’s evidence.
