Chapter 5 - The Tin Box Beneath the Harbor

The dented tin box struck the black water and disappeared.

Evelyn screamed.

Adrian grabbed Caleb by the back of his coat.

“You stupid little rat.”

Nora stepped onto the dock.

“Do not touch him.”

Caleb’s face crumpled with relief when he saw her.

“You came.”

“I promised.”

Roman moved beside Nora.

Adrian watched him with open amusement.

“You brought the maid.”

“She has a name.”

“Victor would be disappointed.”

“Victor is dead.”

Adrian’s smile faded.

“So is Elena. Yet here we all are.”

Divers waited beneath the dock, hidden by the fog. Roman had ordered them into position before approaching.

The moment the box entered the water, two men began searching.

Evelyn lifted a gun toward Caleb’s ribs.

“Bring us the pendant.”

Nora removed the silver half from beneath her dress.

Adrian stared at it.

For twenty years, he had searched for that piece of metal.

Nora closed her fist around it.

“Release Caleb first.”

“You are in no position to negotiate,” Evelyn said.

Nora looked at the water.

“Then enjoy the empty box.”

Adrian’s face changed.

“What?”

“The tin box held coins and baseball cards.”

Caleb smiled despite his fear.

“I told you it was a surprise for Nora.”

Evelyn seized him.

“Where are the documents?”

Caleb looked at his sister.

Nora understood immediately.

Their mother had hidden the truth somewhere connected to the notes Nora left beside Caleb’s breakfast.

Every note ended with the same sentence.

I love you more than all the stars.

Caleb saved each one beneath his bed.

The papers scattered across the apartment floor had not been random.

Their backs contained parts of a map written in invisible ink.

Nora had never known.

Elena had used her daughter’s daily habit to protect information after her death.

“The box was a distraction,” Nora said.

Adrian struck Caleb across the face.

Roman moved forward.

A red laser appeared against Nora’s chest.

More men surrounded the dock from the warehouse roof.

Adrian held up one hand.

“Stay where you are.”

Roman stopped.

His calmness became more frightening than anger.

“You have already lost the right hand you used to touch him.”

Adrian laughed.

“You sound like Father.”

“No. Father would have killed the boy to prove he could.”

For one second, something old passed between the brothers.

The memory of Victor Calder turning cruelty into instruction.

Adrian dragged Caleb closer to the warehouse.

“You believe you are different because you wear better suits and donate to hospitals.”

“I know exactly what I am.”

“And what is that?”

“The man who will leave here with Elena’s children.”

Evelyn’s gaze moved toward Roman.

“This does not need to end badly.”

“You kept Nora without water for six days.”

“She opened private documents.”

“You ordered her killed.”

“She threatened our future.”

“There is no future.”

The words struck Evelyn harder than a weapon.

She had spent four years entering Roman’s world, gaining his trust, and shaping herself into the woman she believed he needed.

Now he dismissed everything with four words.

Her control disappeared.

“You were supposed to marry me.”

“I was supposed to marry someone who did not kidnap children.”

“You think she is family because of a pendant?”

Roman looked toward Nora.

“No. I think she is family because she protected the boy while everyone more powerful than her tried to use him.”

Adrian pulled Caleb toward the warehouse doors.

The river team surfaced beside the dock.

One diver held the recovered tin box.

Evelyn fired.

The bullet struck the diver’s shoulder.

Chaos erupted.

Roman pushed Nora behind a steel support and returned fire. Caleb kicked Adrian’s knee and ran toward the edge.

Evelyn grabbed him.

Nora crossed the open dock before Roman could stop her.

She threw the pendant toward Evelyn.

The silver flashed beneath the lights.

Evelyn released Caleb to catch it.

Nora seized her brother and pulled him down.

Roman’s men entered from the water.

Adrian disappeared through the warehouse door.

Evelyn opened her hand.

The pendant was not there.

Nora had thrown a broken metal clasp from her dress.

Roman raised his gun.

“Where is Adrian going?”

Evelyn smiled through her rage.

“To collect the real documents from your mansion.”

Roman’s face changed.

Before leaving the house, he had ordered Nora’s belongings moved into his private office.

The notes from Caleb’s bedroom were already there.

His security director had confirmed their arrival.

Only someone inside Roman’s organization could give Adrian access.

Roman called the mansion.

No one answered.

Then the phone connected automatically to the security system.

A camera showed Roman’s private office.

His most trusted lieutenant stood beside the scattered notes.

Continue to the next part: Roman discovers the betrayal began years earlier and the invisible map leads to a room hidden beneath his own mansion.
