Chapter 8 - The Man Hidden Beneath Roman’s House
Thomas Hayes had spent nineteen years inside the room beneath the Calder mansion.
Not continuously.
Adrian moved him between private clinics, ships, and hidden apartments whenever Roman’s security came close.
Three months earlier, Thomas was returned to the underground archive because Adrian needed him to open Elena’s files.
He refused.
His body had weakened, but his memory remained clear.
Nora knelt beside the bed.
“You are alive.”
Thomas lifted one shaking hand and touched her cheek.
“You look like her.”
Caleb stood behind Nora, unable to move.
Thomas looked at him.
“My son.”
Caleb began crying.
He crossed the room and pressed his face against the father he had never known.
Roman ordered a doctor brought downstairs.
While Thomas received fluids, he explained what happened after the clinic fire.
Elena and Thomas escaped with evidence against Victor.
They planned to give it to federal agents, but Adrian found them first.
He offered a bargain.
Thomas would return the files.
Elena and Nora would be allowed to disappear.
They accepted because Elena was pregnant and Nora was only a baby.
Adrian broke the agreement.
He took Thomas and told Elena he had died.
For years, he used Thomas’s survival to control her from a distance.
“If she attempted to contact Roman,” Thomas said, “Adrian promised I would be killed.”
Nora gripped the bedrail.
“Mom died eleven years ago.”
Thomas closed his eyes.
“No.”
The room became silent.
“The woman killed in the pharmacy was not Elena.”
Nora stared at him.
“She was identified.”
“By Adrian’s doctor.”
“Where is she?”
“I do not know.”
Three years earlier, Elena found proof Thomas remained alive. She contacted Adrian and offered the final archive code in exchange for seeing him.
Adrian moved Thomas to a townhouse near Washington.
Elena entered.
Before they could escape, Evelyn arrived with Sterling security officers.
“Evelyn knew my mother?” Nora asked.
“She knew her before she met Roman.”
Evelyn’s engagement had always been part of the plan.
Senator Sterling wanted access to the Calder archive. Adrian wanted the waterfront. Elena’s return threatened both.
They imprisoned her again.
Thomas had not seen her since.
“She may still be alive,” Caleb whispered.
Thomas nodded.
Nora felt hope and rage collide inside her.
For eleven years, she had mourned a woman who might be waiting in another locked room.
Roman searched the archive shelves.
He found ledgers connecting Senator Sterling to weapons shipments, bribed officials, and the warehouse where Nora had been held.
A separate folder contained plans for Roman and Evelyn’s wedding.
After the marriage, several Calder companies would transfer into a joint trust.
If Roman died within the first year, Evelyn gained temporary authority.
A medical report had already been prepared claiming Roman suffered from a heart condition.
The doctor’s signature was forged.
Evelyn had not intended only to marry him.
She intended to become his widow.
Caleb touched the completed pendant.
“Why did Mom give us one half each?”
Thomas looked toward the steel door.
“The pendant opens the archive, but it also opens Elena’s emergency account.”
The account contained enough evidence to destroy every official who helped Victor and Adrian.
Only Elena or both of her children could authorize release.
Roman found a satellite transmitter inside the rear cabinet.
It required the pendant and a spoken family phrase.
Nora did not know the phrase.
Caleb did.
“More than all the stars.”
The words Nora wrote on every note.
Elena had taught the phrase to Nora, who unknowingly repeated it to Caleb every morning.
They placed the pendant into the transmitter.
A screen displayed two options.
Release archive.
Locate secondary guardian.
Nora pressed the second.
A map appeared.
The signal came from a private medical residence outside Annapolis.
Registered owner: Sterling Family Foundation.
Roman looked toward his men.
“We move now.”
Before they could leave, the mansion shook.
An explosion struck the western gate.
Security screens showed Senator Sterling’s private force surrounding the property.
Evelyn stood beside her father.
Adrian emerged from the vehicle behind them.
He held a phone toward the camera.
On the screen was Elena Calder.
Older.
Bruised.
