Chapter 7 - The Father Who Lied From the Grave

Roman watched his dead father accuse him without changing expression.

Victor’s recorded voice filled the stone chamber.

“Roman learned Elena survived the clinic fire. He feared she would return and expose him. He sent men to find her in Philadelphia.”

Nora remembered her mother moving them from Philadelphia without explanation when she was seven.

Victor continued.

“The men were ordered to recover the pendant and remove Elena permanently.”

Adrian looked at Nora.

“Your mother did not warn you about me. She warned you about Roman.”

Roman turned toward Father Brennan’s letter in his coat.

“Elena wrote his name.”

“Did she?” Adrian asked. “Or did the priest protect the man controlling Baltimore?”

Nora held the completed pendant.

Every person in the room wanted her to decide which version of the past was real.

Roman did not ask her to trust him.

That frightened her more than a desperate defense would have.

“What happened in Philadelphia?” she asked.

Roman answered.

“I sent men to find Elena.”

Caleb looked up at him.

Nora tightened her hand around the pendant.

“Why?”

“Because I learned she was alive.”

“You told Father Brennan you believed she died.”

“I did until eight years after the fire.”

“What did you do when you found her?”

Roman looked toward Victor’s recording.

“She refused to return. She said the family was still watching her.”

“Did you threaten her?”

“No.”

“Did your men?”

“One disappeared. The other returned with a message.”

“What message?”

Roman removed an old folded paper from his wallet.

He had carried it for twelve years.

The handwriting matched Elena’s letters.

Roman,

If you love me, forget I survived. Victor still controls men who call you their leader. The moment you bring me home, he will reach my children.

Nora read it twice.

“You knew she had children.”

“I knew there were children. I did not know their names or where they lived.”

“Why did you stop searching?”

“Because every attempt brought danger closer to her.”

Adrian laughed.

“You expect them to believe restraint kept you silent for twelve years?”

Roman looked at him.

“You spent those years helping Victor hunt her.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

Roman explained that one of the men sent to Philadelphia had been Vincent’s father.

He disappeared after meeting Elena.

The man who returned confessed that Adrian intercepted them and killed his partner.

Victor’s organization had remained active even after Roman took control.

“I inherited men loyal to our father,” Roman said. “I spent years removing them without knowing which ones were hunting Elena.”

Vincent stood near the stairs listening.

His face changed.

“My father did not vanish because Roman killed him.”

“No,” Adrian said sharply.

Roman looked toward Vincent.

“Adrian did.”

Adrian raised his gun.

Vincent fired first.

One of Adrian’s men fell.

The chamber erupted.

Roman pulled Nora and Caleb behind the stone column. Bullets struck the steel door.

Vincent turned his weapon toward Adrian.

“You promised my father was alive.”

Adrian shot him through the chest.

Vincent collapsed beside the stairs.

Roman fired twice, forcing Adrian behind the television equipment.

The screen displaying Victor flickered.

Nora noticed a cable running from the recorder into a modern digital unit.

The video was not original.

Someone had reconstructed Victor’s face and voice using old footage.

“Roman,” she shouted. “The recording was made recently.”

Adrian looked toward the device.

That moment of distraction was enough.

Roman shot the gun from his hand.

Adrian escaped through a side passage before Roman’s men reached the chamber.

One wounded guard remained.

Caleb found a small remote beside him.

When he pressed it, Victor’s false image changed.

Evelyn appeared in a recording studio wearing headphones.

She repeated lines from a script while technicians generated Victor’s voice.

Nora looked at Roman.

The accusation had been manufactured.

The steel door still required the completed pendant.

She placed both halves into the lock.

The compass rose turned.

Air moved through the chamber as the door opened for the first time in twenty years.

Inside were shelves of files, cash ledgers, photographs, and sealed evidence boxes.

At the center stood a hospital bed.

A man lay beneath a gray blanket.

Nora recognized him from a photograph hidden in her mother’s old Bible.

“Dad?”

Thomas Hayes opened his eyes.

Continue to the next part: Nora’s father reveals Elena survived far longer than anyone knew and may still be alive inside Adrian’s network.
