Chapter 21 - Derek’s Final Request

At some age, Derek asks mediated meeting maybe before dying. Claire already forgave by letter. Do we need? Could show full closure. Let's do at 65/Claire61 maybe Derek diagnosed terminal? Avoid health as moral. He asks one meeting, not deathbed. Claire agrees. Need not because final closure. Let's do.

Chapter 21.

When I was sixty-one, Derek requested one mediated conversation.

No emergency.

No illness.

He had been out of my life for more than twenty years.

Why?

His therapist (through counsel) suggested if victim ever willing, restorative process—not required.

I almost said no.

Then Michael:

“Do you want answers?”

Maybe.

I agreed to one, with trained facilitator.

Derek entered.

He was sixty-five? Start 32, 33 years later =65. Claire28+33=61. Yes.

Gray hair.

No tuxedo.

“Claire.”

“Derek.”

First question:

“Why now?”

“I want to hear you without trying to change what you say.”

Good.

Then:

“What do you think happened at wedding?”

“I assaulted you.”

No cake joke.

Then:

“Why?”

“I was angry you looked unhappy and I wanted control of moment.”

“Did you plan to hurt?”

“No.”

“Did that matter after?”

“No.”

Then:

“Why guarantee scheme?”

He explained:

Bennett Urban failing.

Shame.

Patricia money.

He thought marriage meant shared future, therefore my resources should rescue his risk.

Then:

“Why not ask honestly?”

“I did once and you said no.”

There.

“Then no stopped being acceptable.”

“Yes.”

Then copied signature.

“Did you know crime?”

“I knew it was dishonest. I convinced myself provisional.”

Then:

“Would you have forced me physically to sign in suite?”

Long silence.

“I don't know.”

I waited.

He corrected:

“I had already used physical force in arguments. I planned to keep you from calling Rachel until you signed. So yes, I was prepared to coerce you, even if I had not imagined exactly how.”

Honest.

Then:

“Did you think trial-data threat would work?”

“Yes.”

“Would you have sent?”

“If you still refused? I told myself maybe. I don’t know.”

Then:

“Did you love me?”

“Yes.”

“Still?”

He smiled sadly.

“I love memory, not current you. I don't know current you.”

Healthy.

Then:

“Do you forgive me?”

“I already did.”

“I know.”

“Then what do you want?”

“To know whether there is anything I can do.”

“No.”

He nodded.

That was answer.

Then he asked:

“Can I apologize to Michael?”

“No.”

He accepted.

Not his relationship.

Then:

“Patricia?”

“She apologized.”

“I know.”

No rivalry.

Then meeting ended.

No hug.

Derek said:

“Goodbye, Claire.”

“Goodbye.”

That was final time I saw alive.

No need more.

I left.

Michael waited at café down street because I asked.

He did not ask immediately.

I said:

“It’s done.”

He nodded.

We went home.

Closure was not explosion.

It was a door that did not need reopening.
