Chapter 12 - The Appeal

Derek’s appeal did not erase conviction.

His lawyer argued:

Preliminary net-worth schedule was nonbinding.

No loan funded.

Copied signature did not cause actual loss.

Therefore fraud count improperly characterized.

Prosecutors agreed actual loss zero.

They had never claimed otherwise.

Attempted fraud does not require completed loss, but elements matter.

Appellate court upheld core conviction but ordered one financial count merged/recharacterized at resentencing due overlap with forgery-related conduct.

Sentence reduced by nine months.

Effective:

Six years nine months.

Wedding assault, coercion, protective-order violation remained.

No exoneration.

No company payout.

No $2.4m restitution.

Then Patricia appealed conspiracy conviction.

Upheld.

Then media:

“Wedding groom gets sentence reduced.”

People asked if furious.

No.

Technical correction.

Law should be accurate even for people who hurt you.

Then Crestline.

Pilot diagnostic program eventually launched successfully after validation.

Derek’s threat became absurd footnote.

No patient harm from preliminary issue.

Regulators had always been notified appropriately.

Company external review cleared.

Then I was promoted? Maybe I became Chief Strategy Officer at 31? User likes later life. Let's say at thirty-two, board appointed me Chief Product Officer based career, not scandal.

I worried:

“Looks like sympathy.”

Nora:

“Then decline if you think you don’t deserve.”

I accepted.

Worked.

Then company value grew.

My shares worth more.

That did not make Derek’s scheme more important.

Then Patricia’s release.

She served about two years eight months with credits then supervised release.

Victim notification.

I was thirty-two.

She requested no contact.

Fine.

Then through attorney, she sent a one-page apology request.

I said I would read.

It said:

Claire, I believed marriage meant a wife should merge her judgment with her husband’s. When you resisted Derek’s business plan, I treated your no as a problem to overcome.

Then:

I knew he had frightened women before. I still taught him pressure was normal.

Then:

I did not intend him to injure you at the wedding. I did intend him to make you feel unable to refuse after it. That is enough for me to understand why I was convicted.

Direct.

Then:

I am sorry. I will not contact you again unless you request it.

Good.

I cried.

Did I forgive?

Not yet.

I told attorney no response.

She respected.

Then Derek release later.

He served about five years ten months before supervised release due credits/adjustment.

At thirty-eight.

I was thirty-four.

Victim notice.

No-contact continued through supervision.

He moved to another city.

Worked for property management firm under disclosed conviction.

No new finance role requiring licensing.

Bennett Urban dissolved years earlier.

Creditors settled through property sales.

Patricia’s loan loss final.

Then he asked once through supervision officer:

Could he send apology?

I said no.

He did not.

Good.

Then after supervision complete, no legal bar? Protective order had expired/renewed perhaps. I had renewed once, then allowed lapse after years because no contact and distance. That was not forgiveness.

Then Derek remained away.

No stalking.

No dramatic return.

That mattered more than any speech.

Then I met someone.

Not a billionaire.

Not savior.

Evan Cole, forty, architect? At Claire34 maybe 38. We can include later maybe. But do we need romance? Not required.

I dated once, panicked when man reached for my phone to show photo.

He noticed.

“Sorry.”

Then set it down.

No defensive.

I learned safety can feel boring.

I did not remarry for a long time.

Maybe ever.

Then Lena said:

“You know not marrying isn’t proof Derek won.”

“I know.”

“And marrying isn’t proof you healed.”

“I know.”

Good.

Then one day a letter arrived from Patricia’s estate lawyer.

Not because death.

She wanted to update her trust and asked whether I had claim to any wedding gift property.

No.

Administrative.

I almost laughed.

Life after drama becomes paperwork.

Then I found a small pearl button in jewelry drawer.

From wedding recorder.

I held.

Kept.

Not trauma relic?

Maybe yes, but it represented evidence. Later maybe discard.

Then my therapist asked:

“What do you think it means?”

“That I listened to myself once.”

May you like

Good.

Not all objects need destroy.
