Chapter 20 - What Happened to Lena

Lena never stopped being the person who held envelope.
But I worked hard not to make that her identity.
She became a senior brand strategist, then started own agency.
Had two children.
Divorced amicably later? Could. No need.
She remained married maybe.
At sixty, we still met monthly.
One evening she admitted:
“I was furious at you for going through wedding.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t.”
She had wanted to drag me out three nights before.
Why didn’t?
Because I said:
“If you force me, I’ll stop telling you things.”
She respected.
Good.
Then:
“I still wonder if I should have called police before.”
“For what? No current crime that night.”
“Wall. Wrist.”
“I hadn’t agreed to report.”
She nodded.
Then:
“You taught me something awful.”
“What?”
“You can’t rescue someone by taking choices.”
That was not awful.
It was hard.
Then I said:
“You also missed Derek’s data threat.”
She winced.
“I know.”
“Forgiven.”
Then:
“You forgive everyone too easily.”
Maybe.
We laughed.
Then her son asked once:
“Were you really at cake wedding?”
Lena said:
“Yes.”
“Did you punch groom?”
“No.”
“Boring.”
Exactly.
She did not become action hero.
She called 911.
Held documents.
Stayed.
That was enough.
Then at my seventieth birthday, Lena brought white cake.
Michael rolled eyes:
“Again?”
Tradition now.
I cut first slice.
Lena said:
“Smile, Claire.”
Everyone froze for half second.
Then realized.
I pointed knife:
“Careful.”
We laughed until crying.
Humor reclaimed only because I chose.
If anyone else had made joke years earlier, I would have hated.
Timing and consent.
Same words can harm or heal depending relationship.
Then Lena died before me? Maybe later. No need yet.
