Chapter 7 - THE ATTORNEY WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

Jonathan did not deny the meeting.

“Beatrice contacted me,” he said.

“Why did you go?” I asked.

“She claimed she wanted to protect the child from Arthur.”

“You believed her?”

“No. I wanted to learn what she knew.”

“Did you tell Rachel?”

“I told Owen Hale.”

The room became silent.

Jonathan had reported directly to the man now tied to the conspiracy.

He believed Hale supervised the investigation lawfully.

Beatrice offered him the original Whitmore research certificate in exchange for altering the child trust.

Jonathan refused.

She then showed him a recording of Samuel Whitmore admitting he had used false shell companies to protect Evelyn’s intellectual property.

She threatened to release it publicly and make my father appear responsible for the Vance fraud.

“I told her reputation was not worth surrendering your child’s rights.”

“What did she want changed?”

“She wanted the trust to activate through Julian rather than you.”

“Could you do that?”

“No.”

“Then why meet again?”

Jonathan lowered his eyes.

Because Beatrice claimed Evelyn Whitmore had created a second trust amendment before her death.

If valid, the amendment transferred control not to me, but to the first biological grandchild born through an approved fertility clinic.

Nora Price’s medical certification would determine the beneficiary.

That explained why the clinic records mattered so much.

Beatrice did not merely need my signature.

She needed control over the document identifying which child activated the trust.

Chloe’s false pregnancy offered a replacement beneficiary.

If Beatrice could certify Chloe’s future child through manipulated records, she could redirect the Whitmore shares entirely.

“But Chloe is not pregnant,” I said.

“Not yet,” Jonathan replied.

Nora’s clinic had stored one frozen embryo created from Julian’s biological material and an anonymous donor egg.

Beatrice planned to implant it after my child was born.

Chloe believed the procedure would make her a billionaire’s wife.

Julian had not known the embryo existed.

The family had been preparing alternate heirs like financial instruments.

Rachel ordered Jonathan’s devices preserved.

Before she could continue, Owen Hale entered with federal security officers.

“Agent Morgan, you are removed from this matter pending review of undisclosed financial conflicts.”

Rachel remained standing.

“Arthur Vance produced those allegations twenty minutes ago.”

“They are supported by bank records.”

“Records created through the same shell network.”

“That will be determined independently.”

Hale turned toward me.

“Clara will be transferred to a federal medical facility.”

My doctor stepped between us.

“She is eight months pregnant and under continuous observation. Moving her now creates unnecessary risk.”

Hale presented a sealed order.

“The facility is equipped for obstetric care.”

Rachel looked at the signature.

“This was approved before the ballroom raid.”

Hale had prepared to take me regardless of what happened.

The federal warrant, the hospital transfer, and the shell company accusations were not emergency reactions.

They were the next stage.

I refused to leave voluntarily.

Hale’s expression hardened.

“You are restrained from controlling Whitmore assets. Refusing transfer may be treated as obstruction.”

“I am a patient, not property.”

The medical team contacted hospital counsel.

For two hours, lawyers argued while my child’s heart rate appeared on the monitor.

Rachel remained outside under supervision.

Before security collected her phone, she placed a small evidence bag inside my medical chart.

No one noticed.

Later, when the nurse adjusted my blanket, I opened it.

Inside was the cracked wristwatch from the ballroom.

Rachel had recovered it from the gift debris.

The watch contained a hidden storage chip.

I had used it to record meetings when carrying my phone felt unsafe.

The final recording was unfamiliar.

Beatrice’s voice spoke inside Arthur’s study.

“Hale believes Clara will trust Rachel until the transfer.”

Jonathan answered:

“And after the baby is born?”

Beatrice said:

“The government takes the trust. We take the child. Hale takes everything else.”

Jonathan’s reply came quietly.

“You are assuming I will help you.”

“No. I am reminding you that Evelyn is still alive.”

My mother had died twenty four years earlier.

May you like

At least that was what I had been told.

Continue to the next part: Clara discovers that her mother may have survived the crash and that the federal prosecutor targeting her has been searching for Evelyn’s missing trust amendment for decades.
