Chapter 5 - THE REPORT JULIAN CHOSE TO BELIEVE

Julian requested a private meeting through his attorney.
I refused privacy.
Rachel, Jonathan, and my independent counsel remained inside the room.
I was still in the hospital, still monitored, and still carrying his child.
Julian appeared on a secure screen from federal offices.
The bruise from my kick had darkened beneath his shirt.
He stared at my hospital gown.
“How is the baby?”
“You lost the right to receive medical information from me when you struck me.”
His eyes lowered.
“I did not mean to hit your stomach.”
“You hit an eight month pregnant woman.”
“You had evidence that could destroy my family.”
“That is not a defense.”
“No.”
The word came softly.
He admitted learning about the Whitmore trust after our wedding.
Arthur described it as an outdated legal threat created by my unstable mother.
Julian believed the trust should belong to the Vances because his family transformed the original research into a profitable company.
When I became pregnant, Beatrice showed him the false genetic report.
It claimed the embryo had been created with another man’s sample.
“Why did you not ask me?” I said.
“Because you would deny knowing.”
“I did not know.”
“I thought you married me to activate the trust.”
The cruelty of the accusation almost made me laugh.
“You were the one who knew about it.”
He closed his eyes.
Beatrice told him the family needed legal guardianship of the baby immediately after birth.
The false paternity report would allow Julian to deny responsibility publicly while privately claiming the child as a Vance trust beneficiary if necessary.
If I signed the documents, Beatrice would control the shares.
If I refused, Nora would testify that fertility medication had caused emotional instability and impaired judgment.
The Vances would request emergency custody after delivery.
Chloe’s fake pregnancy supplied the public replacement story.
They intended to call my child illegitimate before using the same child to control the company.
“Did Arthur approve this?” Rachel asked.
Julian hesitated.
“He approved the trust strategy.”
“The assault?”
“No.”
“The false medical evidence?”
“He knew Nora was helping.”
“What did you know about Owen Hale?”
Julian looked toward his attorney.
The attorney advised him to answer only under a formal cooperation agreement.
Rachel offered no immunity.
Julian continued anyway.
Hale had protected Vance Biomedical during two earlier federal investigations.
Arthur paid consulting companies connected to Hale’s brother.
In exchange, Hale warned the family about subpoenas, delayed warrants, and redirected investigators toward lower level employees.
When Rachel’s task force began examining the shell companies, Hale informed Arthur.
That was how the family learned someone inside the estate was cooperating.
They did not initially know it was me.
Then the medical pendant transmitted my visit to a federal building.
Beatrice understood.
“Why did they leave the evidence where I could find it?” I asked.
“To identify what you copied.”
They altered selected files on Julian’s tablet.
Each contained hidden tracking codes.
When I transferred them to Rachel, Hale saw which evidence entered the federal system.
My cooperation had become a map of the investigation.
Julian claimed he wanted to leave the plan after learning Chloe was not pregnant.
He continued the affair.
He attended the baby shower.
He watched Beatrice insult me.
He struck me.
His late doubt did not become courage simply because the raid succeeded.
“What was in Arthur’s portfolio?” Rachel asked.
“A sale agreement transferring Vance Biomedical patents to a company in Luxembourg.”
“Who owns it?”
“I do not know.”
“Who prepared the documents?”
“Owen Hale.”
The senior federal prosecutor had not only protected the fraud.
He had designed the exit.
Rachel looked toward the observation camera.
She understood Hale’s office might be watching us.
Before the meeting ended, Julian said one thing directly to me.
“My mother believed your baby had to be born before the trust could be taken.”
“Yes.”
“My father disagreed.”
“What did Arthur want?”
Julian’s face changed.
“He said a child who never took a breath could never challenge ownership.”
Silence filled the hospital room.
No document proved Arthur planned to harm my baby.
The sentence proved he understood what the trust required and considered the possibility of preventing it.
Rachel’s phone rang.
Agents had found Nora Price.
She had not entered witness protection.
She was inside a private residence owned by Hale’s brother.
The silver case beside her contained the original embryo records.
Nora had been preparing to destroy them.
One page had already been burned.

The surviving report confirmed Julian was the biological father of my unborn child.
Continue to the next part: Arthur turns against his own family to protect himself, exposing the political official who helped build the shell companies before Clara ever met Julian.
