Chapter 4 - THE MISTRESS WHO CARRIED NOTHING
Chloe entered the federal interview room wearing hospital scrubs borrowed after agents took her gold dress as evidence.
Without diamonds, makeup, or Julian beside her, she looked younger than twenty two.
That did not make her innocent.
Rachel allowed me to watch from another room.
Chloe’s attorney sat beside her.
“I was never pregnant,” she said.
“Who asked you to claim you were?” Rachel asked.
“Beatrice.”
“Did Julian know?”
“At first, no.”
The affair began six months earlier.
Julian met Chloe at a Vance charity auction. She worked for a luxury event company and had recently lost her apartment after her employer collapsed.
He offered her money.
Then a job.
Then hotel rooms.
Chloe knew he was married.
She had seen photographs of my pregnancy announcement.
She continued.
Three months later, Beatrice approached her.
She said my unborn child was not Julian’s.
She claimed Nora Price had discovered an embryo identification error and hidden it to avoid scandal.
Beatrice offered Chloe five million dollars to pretend she was pregnant with Julian’s child.
The performance would pressure me into signing a separation agreement and surrendering the Whitmore trust.
“Did you believe the baby was not Julian’s?” Rachel asked.
“I wanted to.”
“Did Julian?”
Chloe looked toward the table.
“Beatrice showed him a genetic report.”
The report stated the embryo used in my treatment did not match Julian’s biological sample.
It was false.
Nora’s clinic had created it.
Julian confronted Beatrice privately.
Instead of asking me or requesting independent testing, he began sleeping beside me while believing I carried another man’s child.
He never said a word.
He allowed his mother to turn suspicion into a weapon.
At the baby shower, Chloe had been instructed to place one hand over her stomach and let guests assume pregnancy.
Beatrice would announce that the family had found a true future.
Julian would demand that I leave.
Chloe expected humiliation.
She claimed she did not know he would strike me.
“You watched him hit her,” Rachel said.
“Yes.”
“You smiled afterward.”
Chloe began crying.
“I was terrified.”
“You placed your hand on his arm.”
“I thought if I looked shocked, Beatrice would know I wanted out.”
Again, fear explained a choice without erasing it.
Chloe also admitted the diamond bracelet contained a hardware wallet.
Beatrice had transferred three million dollars in digital assets to it.
The money came from North Sound Research Partners, one of the shell companies in my name.
If federal agents found the bracelet near me, the transfer would connect me to the hidden funds.
Chloe tried to hide it inside the gift bag because Beatrice told her the device could send everyone to prison.
“Why cooperate now?” Rachel asked.
“Because Julian looked at Clara on the floor and asked Arthur whether the baby’s distress would delay the trust.”
The words entered me through the hospital monitor speaker.
Julian had not asked whether our child was alive.
He had asked whether the inheritance would wait.
Chloe gave Rachel access to her messages.
One came from Beatrice that morning.
Do not let Clara leave before two. Hale needs her phone active when the accounts transfer.
The eighteen million dollars moved through the shell companies at 1:57.
My phone’s location at the Vance estate made it appear I authorized them.
The medical pendant supplied biometric data.
My pulse, voice, and face had been used to approve transfers while Julian humiliated me before witnesses.
Beatrice had designed the dinner, the assault, and the financial frame as one synchronized event.
Chloe revealed something else.
Nora Price kept the original embryo records outside the clinic.
She feared Beatrice would destroy them.
The files were stored inside a private laboratory at St. Catherine’s Hospital.
Rachel sent agents immediately.
They found the storage box.
It was empty.
Security footage showed Nora arriving at dawn.
She left carrying a silver case.
Beside her walked a man in a federal protective service jacket.
The jacket belonged to Owen Hale’s office.
Hale claimed Nora had requested witness protection.
Rachel had not been informed.
Then Chloe gave them a voice message Julian sent after the ballroom raid.
