Chapter 6 - THE FATHER WHO SOLD EVERYONE
Arthur Vance entered the cooperation room without Beatrice.
He wore no tuxedo.
His expensive white shirt was open at the collar, and his hands trembled as he placed a leather portfolio before Rachel.
“I will explain the accounts,” he said.
“In exchange for what?” she asked.
“Protection from my wife and Owen Hale.”
Rachel almost smiled.
“You controlled a billion dollar corporation. Do not introduce yourself as the frightened person in the room.”
Arthur looked toward me.
“I never approved Julian striking you.”
“You approved using my child.”
“I approved a legal strategy.”
“Built on false medical records.”
“I was told the report was real.”
“Nora says you paid her.”
His expression changed.
Nora had begun cooperating after agents showed her the surviving embryo report.
She admitted accepting payments from Beatrice and Arthur.
Arthur shifted blame.
He said Beatrice managed family matters while he focused on the company.
The portfolio contradicted him.
It contained offshore agreements, false research contracts, political donations, and internal messages about the Whitmore trust.
Arthur signed most of them.
The shell companies under my name had been created by Samuel Whitmore, my father.
But he had not created them for fraud.
After Evelyn’s death, Samuel established dormant entities to preserve her research licenses.
Arthur and Hale secretly reactivated them years later.
They copied my identification from old trust records and moved money through accounts designed to resemble legitimate Whitmore operations.
“That began before I met Julian.”
Arthur nodded.
“Your marriage made the structure safer.”
“If investigators found it, I would look like a wife helping her husband.”
“Yes.”
He showed no shame.
Only calculation.
Arthur revealed that Owen Hale’s involvement began when he served as a federal health care attorney.
Hale negotiated the settlement that allowed Vance Biomedical to retain Evelyn’s research after hospitals accused the company of unauthorized patient data use.
The public settlement required reforms.
A private agreement gave Hale influence over future licensing.
He formed North Sound Research Partners through intermediaries and collected payments whenever Vance technology entered a new market.
Arthur needed political protection.
Hale needed the Vance empire profitable.
The Whitmore trust threatened both.
If my child activated the anti dilution clause, independent auditors would gain access to every historical transaction.
The inheritance was not merely valuable.
It was a door into twenty years of fraud.
“Why cooperate now?” Rachel asked.
“Hale served a warrant against Clara.”
“That protected you.”
“It also places every disputed asset under federal control.”
Arthur finally understood that Hale intended to take the company from him.
The Vances believed they were partners.
Hale had been waiting for the family to expose itself.
Once the assets were frozen, his office could steer settlements, forfeitures, and sales toward companies he controlled.
Arthur handed Rachel a list of payments.
One recipient appeared repeatedly.
Morgan Strategic Security.
Rachel stared at the name.
The company belonged to her former husband.
“I divorced him eight years ago.”
Arthur watched her carefully.
“Hale chose you for the task force because he believed your family finances could be questioned if you resisted.”
Rachel’s face remained controlled.
The threat was clear.
Hale had prepared evidence against her too.
Every person near the investigation carried a private vulnerability.
Arthur claimed he possessed one document capable of proving Hale owned North Sound Research Partners.
It was stored inside the Vance estate security vault.
Agents searched the vault during the raid.
The compartment was empty.
Beatrice had removed the document minutes before entering the ballroom.
“Where is she?” Rachel asked.
Arthur looked toward me.
“With the one person who knows how to destroy the Whitmore trust permanently.”
“Who?”
“Jonathan Reed.”
I turned toward my mother’s attorney.
He stood near the hospital window.
His face lost color.
