Margaret Price answered Maya’s call.
No mystery voice.
No games.
“Yes, I called the Aurelia.”
My chest tightened.
“Are you the woman in the store footage?”
“Yes.”
“So you are not my mother.”
“No.”
Disappointment hit harder than expected.
Then why bluebird phrase?
“Eleanor gave it to me.”
When?
Eight years ago.
Before disappearance.
Mom told Margaret:
If Avery ever activates breach clause, call hidden room and use bluebird phrase so she knows message originates from someone Eleanor trusted.
The voice sounded like Mom because?
Memory.
Hope.
And Margaret had known her for thirty years.
Their speech patterns overlapped slightly.
I had heard what I wanted.
Good.
One mystery resolved without fantasy.
Then:
“Is my mother alive?”
Margaret paused.
“I do not know.”
“When did you last see her?”
“Four years ago.”
The room stopped.
Not eight months.
Not blurry Montreal possibility.
Four years.
Confirmed?
Margaret claimed yes.

Mom contacted her through old protocol.
They met in person.
Why?

“She was alive four years ago?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t she contact me?”
Margaret’s voice softened.
“I asked.”
“What did she say?”
“That contacting you would bring Richard’s creditors to you.”
Father whispered:
“That makes no sense.”
Margaret heard.
“It did to Eleanor.”
Then she explained.
After Mom disappeared, she believed someone was using Mercer family financial obligations to trace her.
She did not trust Father, Grant, Caleb, or Nolan.
She did trust Margaret.
She kept control of Registry 9 through her.
Why not police?
Because Mom believed dispute partly civil and that accusing powerful people without complete proof would result in her being forced back into litigation and guardianship claims Father had threatened.
Father stood.
“I never threatened guardianship.”
Margaret said:
“You asked Caleb whether Eleanor’s stress made her financially irrational.”
He did not answer.
Caleb had drafted a memo on incapacity options.
Maybe normal marital litigation strategy.
To Mom, threat.
Then:
“Did Eleanor leave voluntarily?”
“Yes.”
At least initially.
Margaret saw travel cash, documents.
Mom planned disappearance.
Why stage ferry car?
“I advised against it.”
She wanted family to believe she left country?
Maybe.
Margaret did not know exact reason.
Then four years ago, Mom returned because Registry 9 received inquiry.
From who?
Nolan.
My brother.
He had requested Schedule C copy under father company authority.
That was when Mom realized old conflict returning.
She met Margaret.
Updated instructions.
Then vanished again.
Nolan stared.
“I requested dozens of archives.”
“You triggered her.”
He looked shaken.
Did he know mother alive then?
No.
Margaret never told.
Then Registry 9 contents.
Original Schedule C.
Finally.
Margaret would not transmit electronically.
Independent legal viewing.
Maya, North Atlantic, Black Harbor counsel, Grant’s counsel all attended.
Original document showed:
Eleanor’s signature.
Real.
But the controversial clause was not there.
The photocopy Black Harbor used contained an additional page.

The added page bore Mom’s initials.

If proven, Harbor claim on Aurelia weakened dramatically.

Metadata impossible on old paper.
But Grant certified copy.
Caleb drafted amendment.
Father directed financing.
Any.
Then Margaret produced Registry log.
Entry:
C5A submitted by G.H. seven months after closing.
G.H.
Grant Holloway.
He submitted the extra page.
Basis:
Supplemental authority from Richard Mercer.
Mom never signed.
Grant had treated Father’s authority as sufficient and affixed her previously provided initials to acknowledge formatting.
He claimed administrative incorporation.
Mom called unauthorized alteration.
This was the heart.
Maybe civil fraud.
Maybe not.
But now current creditor leverage was built on disputed appended page.
Maya immediately challenged Black Harbor claim.
Their counsel suspended enforcement pending review.
Father’s fourteen point eight million emergency disappeared.
The payment no longer needed to happen tonight.
His empire had breathing room.
Then Father looked at me.
“You saved the company.”
“No.”
“Your mother did.”
Maybe.
Then Margaret added:
“Do not celebrate.”
Why?
Registry 9 contained another original.
Not Schedule C.
A transfer agreement signed by Eleanor four years ago.
After her presumed disappearance.
It moved her Ashcroft Harbor interest.
To who?
Not me.
Not North Atlantic.
Recipient:
A company called Meridian Blue.
Current owner unknown.
