Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN IN BOSTON

I wanted the woman to be Mom.
That made me dangerous.
Maya knew.
“Similarity is not identification.”
“I know.”
“Say it.”
“It is not identification.”
Good.
We did not build truth from grief.
The Boston footage showed:
Woman approximately five foot seven.
Estimated age late fifties to early sixties.
Dark hair with gray.
Left leg stiffness.
No clear face.
She paid cash.
Bought prepaid phone.
Called the Aurelia hidden line fifteen minutes later.
Possible.
Not enough.
Then investigators traced the old Thomas Vale invoice.
Subject located.
Eight months after Mom disappeared.
A hotel in Montreal.
Thomas Vale had charged Father for three days there.
Expense notes:
Visual confirmation probable.
No contact per client.
Why would Father order no contact?
He finally answered.
“Because Eleanor told Thomas she would run again if I approached.”
My chest tightened.
“You knew she was alive.”
“I knew someone Thomas believed was Eleanor was alive.”
“And you told me she was dead.”
“I told you your mother was gone.”
“No. You held a memorial.”
“Three years later.”
“You petitioned to have her declared dead.”
“Seven years later.”
“While knowing she might be alive.”
His face hardened.
“I spent millions looking for her.”
“Why no police?”
“She left voluntarily.”
“Did she?”
“I believed so.”
“What about her car at the ferry?”
“She staged it.”
“Proof?”
He had none.
Then he gave us Thomas Vale’s full reports through counsel.
Not willingly.
Under trustee demand because the reports related to trust management.
The Montreal woman was photographed.
Blurry.
Could be Mom.
She used name:
Elise Morgan.
No passport copy.
No confirmed biometrics.
Thomas attempted follow.
Lost her.
Six months later:
Boston.
Then:
Portland, Maine.
Then nothing for four years.
Father continued paying.
He did not appear to be hiding her existence from investigator.
But he hid it from us.
Why?
He said:
“You were twenty four. Nolan was falling apart. The company was under attack. I could not have you chasing a ghost.”
I stared.
“Maybe I deserved to choose.”
“Yes.”
The admission surprised me.
“I was wrong.”
Not apology.
But first crack.
Then Nolan asked the question I had not.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Father looked at him.
“You would have found her.”
“So?”
“And dragged her back.”
Nolan went silent.
Father knew his son.
Then Thomas Vale’s report contained one important detail.
Montreal subject met a man.
Grant Holloway.
Grant had said he saw Mom only once in New York two days after disappearance.
Lie.
Photo showed him meeting the possible Eleanor eight months later.
When confronted, Grant amended.
“I was protecting her.”
“From Richard?”
“From everyone.”
“Why?”
“She believed Kestrel records were being altered.”
By whom?
Grant said she suspected a lawyer.
Name:
Caleb Ross.
Mercer Hospitality outside counsel at the time.
He drafted Harbor One amendments.
Alive.
Now chairman of a private investment firm.
Caleb denied wrongdoing.
Then old metadata:
Several disputed Kestrel documents created on Caleb’s law firm system.
Eleanor’s signature added electronically.
Audit certificate used:
Richard Mercer Family Office.
Who controlled?
Father and assistant.
Could be valid.
Could be forged.
Then one email from Caleb to Grant:
Eleanor will not approve Schedule C. Richard says proceed under omnibus authority.
There.
They knew she objected.
They proceeded anyway because they believed old authority covered.
Maybe legal dispute.
Maybe fraud.
Mom believed theft.
Then another:
If she challenges after closing, we litigate.
Not murder.
Corporate aggression.
Then the missing twelve million Mom discussed.
Seven to Lattice.
Three to North Coast.
Two disappeared.
We traced current successors.
Lattice became part of Black Harbor Private Credit.
The same lender now foreclosing on Father.
So yesterday’s fourteen point eight million payoff was going back to a descendant of the old Harbor One network.
History had looped.
North Coast?
Dissolved.
Its former managing partner:
Caleb Ross.
Now things tightened.
Mom’s money went into entities linked to lawyer handling documents.
Potential conflict.
Then the missing two million.
Recipient archive finally recovered.
A trust.
Avery Mercer Education Trust.
Mine.
I stared.
“The missing money came to me?”
It funded college.
Graduate school.
My first apartment.
Mom had set it aside.
So not missing theft.
At least that piece.
She deliberately routed two million into my protected trust.
Why did she call it disappeared?
Because Kestrel ledger had hidden beneficiary name.
Maybe she had not yet identified.
Not every suspicious transaction was criminal.
Then Father said:
“Your mother was moving money too.”
“Into my trust.”
“Without telling me.”
“She did not need your permission.”
“That is not the point.”
“It is exactly the point.”
We were finally seeing marriage through financial structures.
Two people who had stopped trusting each other.
Both moving assets.
One to protect children.
One to keep empire alive.
Grant and Caleb exploiting ambiguity.
Nolan taking what Father gave him without asking origin.
Then Boston woman called again.
This time she left voicemail.
For me.
“Avery.”
I listened.
“Do not let Maya open the blue annex.”
I looked at Maya.
She went still.
“What blue annex?”
The voicemail continued.
“Your mother put it inside the breach file. Richard never saw it.”
Only a few people knew Maya carried a blue legal folder.
But “blue annex” sounded like a document.
Maya opened her folder.
Behind the breach clause was a sealed blue envelope she had never opened because the trustee instructed:
RELEASE ONLY AFTER MATERIAL BREACH AND OWNER INJURY.
My assault activated both.
On front:
ELEANOR MERCER
FOR AVERY ONLY

The caller knew it existed.
Continue to the next part: The mysterious caller directs Avery to a sealed blue annex Eleanor placed inside the breach documents years before her disappearance.
