Chapter 11 - ELEANOR CURRENT

Nolan swore the card was not his.

Video showed it falling from his jacket.

That did not prove knowledge.

Someone could have placed it.

But his jacket had been in his control most evening.

Contents mattered more.

Encrypted with a password derived from Mercer Hospitality system.

Maya’s forensic team accessed under investigator supervision.

Folder:

ELEANOR CURRENT.

Six photographs.

All taken within last year.

Woman entering a pharmacy.

Woman leaving an apartment building.

Woman boarding a train.

Face partially visible in two.

She looked like Mom.

Older.

Thinner.

But clearly closer than Boston store footage.

Then a spreadsheet.

Surveillance dates.

Addresses.

Vehicle plate.

Someone had been tracking her.

Nolan turned pale.

“I didn’t do this.”

Who did?

Document author:

HOLLOWAY-RISK.

Grant Holloway?

His private family office maintained risk consultants.

Grant admitted commissioning a search.

Why?

“Eleanor contacted Registry 9.”

He somehow learned.

How?

A former bank employee notified him when dormant filing was updated.

Privacy breach.

He wanted to know if she was alive because her existence affected Harbor claims.

He hired investigator.

Why was card in Nolan’s jacket?

Grant met Nolan at opening reception.

Camera showed them speaking twenty minutes before assault.

Grant shook his hand.

Then briefly touched Nolan’s breast pocket?

Could have slipped card intentionally.

Why?

Grant claimed he wanted Nolan to give it to Richard privately.

“Why not give Richard yourself?”

“I did not trust his reactions.”

“You trusted Nolan?”

Silence.

Nobody trusted anyone correctly.

Then card included one audio clip.

Investigator speaking to Grant.

“We have likely identification.”

“Contact?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Subject appears protected.”

“By whom?”

“Unknown security.”

Then:

“She visits one location repeatedly.”

Address.

Boston law office.

Firm:

Price & Morgan.

Margaret Price’s daughter worked there.

So Mom remained connected to Margaret’s family.

Then final image.

Mom meeting a man.

His face clear.

Caleb Ross.

The lawyer.

Three months ago.

I stared.

Caleb had said he had not seen Eleanor since before disappearance.

Lie.

Confronted, he stopped voluntary interview.

His attorney took over.

Why meet?

Eventually he admitted:

“She contacted me.”

“For what?”

“To negotiate.”

“What?”

“Original Schedule C dispute.”

Mom wanted Black Harbor to withdraw claim before Aurelia opened.

Caleb represented Black Harbor.

She offered something.

What?

Her Meridian Blue interest.

She would transfer part of Harbor rights if they released any claim against Aurelia.

So Mother was actively trying to protect hotel from shadows.

Why not tell me?

“She said Avery must remain outside until breach.”

Again.

Mom controlled information relentlessly.

Protective.

Also manipulative.

Then did Black Harbor accept?

No.

Grant wanted more.

He wanted recognition of Schedule C.

Mom refused.

Negotiations stalled.

Then Caleb told her Father planned opening night payoff.

She became alarmed.

That may be why caller activated now.

She knew breach event.

Then Maya asked:

“Is Eleanor alive?”

Caleb answered:

“Yes.”

No ambiguity.

He met her.

Three months ago.

Father closed his eyes.

Nolan started crying.

I did neither.

I felt empty.

Eight years.

My mother alive.

Choosing not to see me.

Maybe for reasons.

Still choice.

“Where?”

Caleb did not know current.

Meeting arranged through intermediary.

Then:

“Why did you help declare her dead?”

“I did not.”

He had withdrawn from Mercer representation before petition.

Fine.

Father petitioned after seven years because trust and estate required resolution.

He now learned she was alive.

His face was impossible to read.

“Did she ever ask about me?”

Caleb paused.

“Yes.”

“What did she ask?”

“Whether you had stopped borrowing.”

Father laughed once.

Then cried.

Quietly.

First time I had seen.

“She knows me.”

Maybe.

Then card had one more file.

Not Grant’s surveillance.

A scanned letter addressed:

NOLAN

From Eleanor.

Date:

Five months ago.

My brother claimed never received.

Delivery record?

Sent to his office.

Signed by assistant.

What did it say?

Nolan,

Stop using Avery’s expected rights to cover Mercer debt.

If you approach Harbor One again, I will release everything.

Nolan read.

Hands shaking.

His assistant had never shown him?

Could be intercepted.

Who was assistant?

Lena Brooks.

She had left company four months ago.

Why?

No reason recorded.

Contacted now, she said:

“Richard told me to give the letter to him, not Nolan.”

Father looked shocked.

“I never saw it.”

Lena insisted she delivered sealed envelope to Father’s chief of staff.

Chief of staff:

Marcus Hale.

He denied.

Security logs showed Lena entered his office.

Then Marcus Hale resigned two weeks later.

Current employer?

Black Harbor Private Credit.

The lender.

We finally had a current insider bridge.

Someone inside Father’s office diverted Mom’s warning and moved to creditor.

Continue to the next part: Eleanor tried to warn Nolan months before the assault, but the letter was intercepted by a Mercer executive who soon left the family company to work for Black Harbor.
