Chapter 4

The ballroom was silent.
No one reached for another glass of champagne.
No one dared whisper.
Hundreds of guests stood frozen as photographs, hospital records, and DNA reports lay scattered across the polished marble floor.
Jonathan Hawthorne could barely breathe.
His eyes moved from one photograph to another.
There he was...
Seventeen years younger.
Standing beside Isabella.
Smiling with tears of joy.
Holding one newborn son.
Another photograph showed Isabella cradling two identical babies.
The twins.
The sons he had believed fate had taken from him.
His hands shook violently.
"This..."
He looked at Lucas.
"...this can't be real."
Lucas knelt and picked up the final photograph.
It showed Jonathan kissing both babies before a nurse wheeled one away.
He gently handed it to Jonathan.
"It is."
"You held me."
"For almost an hour."
Jonathan stared at the picture.
A tear rolled down his cheek.
"I remember..."
His voice cracked.
"I remember asking the nurse to bring both boys back together after their examination."
He slowly looked toward Eleanor.
"You told me..."
"...the doctors had already taken him."
Eleanor remained silent.
Jonathan took another step toward her.
"You said the police believed he had been kidnapped."
Silence.
"You watched Isabella destroy herself with guilt."
Silence.
"You stood beside her at the funeral."
Still...
Silence.
The room felt suffocating.
Finally, Jonathan shouted,
"ANSWER ME!"
His voice echoed through the ballroom.
Even the crystal chandeliers seemed to tremble.
Eleanor slowly straightened her shoulders.
For the first time all evening...
She smiled.
It wasn't warm.
It wasn't loving.
It was cold.
Calculated.
"I did what had to be done."
Gasps spread through the crowd.
Jonathan blinked in disbelief.
"What did you say?"
She looked directly into his eyes.
"I protected this family."
Lucas clenched his fists.
"You stole a baby."
"I saved an empire."
The ballroom erupted into whispers.
Eleanor continued as though she were giving a business presentation.
"Isabella was weak."
"She came from nothing."
"She would have divided your attention."
"Two heirs meant twice the risk."
"I only needed one grandson."
Jonathan stepped backward as if struck.
"You..."
"You planned this?"
"Of course."
"You were too emotional to make difficult decisions."
She glanced dismissively toward Lucas.
"So I made them for you."
Lucas felt anger rising inside him.
"You stole seventeen years from us."
She shrugged.
"And yet..."
She pointed toward Ethan.
"He grew up with every advantage."
"The family remained powerful."
"My decision worked."
The words echoed across the ballroom.
Several guests quietly walked away from Eleanor.
Others stared at her in horror.
One elderly businessman whispered,
"My God..."
"She's admitting everything."

Jonathan's face turned pale.
Then something inside him finally broke.
For seventeen years...
He had blamed fate.
He had blamed criminals.
He had blamed himself.
He had blamed God.
Never once...
Had he imagined the monster responsible had been eating dinner at his table every night.
He slowly walked toward Eleanor.
Not as a frightened son.
But as a father who had finally found his child.
"You watched me search."
"You watched me suffer."
"You watched Isabella die believing she had failed our son."
His voice became steadier with every word.
"And you said nothing."
Eleanor lifted her chin proudly.
"I have no regrets."
The sentence hung in the air.
Jonathan closed his eyes.
When he opened them again...
The grief was gone.
Only resolve remained.
He turned toward the hundreds of guests filling the ballroom.
"Every person in this room..."
"...has witnessed my mother's confession."
Then he looked at his family attorney.
"Mr. Collins."
The elderly lawyer stepped forward.
"Yes, sir."
"I want every trust..."
"...every board position..."
"...every power of attorney..."
"...every financial privilege..."
"...held by Eleanor Hawthorne..."
"...revoked tonight."
The ballroom exploded into shocked murmurs.
Eleanor's confident smile vanished.
"You can't be serious."
Jonathan ignored her.
"I also want our legal team to cooperate fully with the authorities."
His voice rang through the hall.
"If crimes were committed..."
"...they will be prosecuted."
Eleanor grabbed his arm.
"Jonathan!"
"You owe everything you have to me!"
He slowly removed her hand.
"No."
"I owe everything..."
"...to the woman you destroyed."
He looked toward a large portrait hanging above the grand staircase.
A portrait of Isabella.
She smiled gently from the canvas, exactly as he remembered her.
Jonathan whispered,
"I'm sorry..."
"I failed you."
Then he turned toward Lucas.
For a long moment...
Neither father nor son spoke.
Seventeen years of stolen memories stood between them.
First words.
First steps.
Birthdays.
School plays.
Christmas mornings.
All gone.
No court.
No fortune.
No apology...
Could ever return them.
Jonathan walked forward slowly.
"I don't expect forgiveness."
Lucas looked at the man he had searched for half his life.
"I know."
"I don't even expect you to call me Dad."
Lucas's eyes filled with tears.
Jonathan's voice broke.
"I only ask..."
"...for a chance."
Lucas looked at the photographs scattered across the floor.
Then at the man crying in front of him.
Finally...
He stepped forward.
Jonathan hesitated.
Lucas opened his arms.
Without another word...
The father embraced the son he had lost seventeen years earlier.
Around them...
The ballroom stood in complete silence.
Many guests quietly wiped away tears.
But high above the reunion...
One pair of eyes burned with hatred.
Eleanor.
She wasn't finished yet.
May you like
And before the night was over...
She would make one final attempt to destroy everything.
