Chapter 1

The crystal chandelier sparkled above hundreds of elegantly dressed guests.

Champagne glasses clinked.

A string quartet played softly from the corner of the magnificent ballroom.

The Hawthorne family was celebrating.

Tonight marked the eighteenth birthday of Ethan Hawthorne—the only heir to one of the country's wealthiest families.

Business leaders.

Politicians.

Celebrities.

Everyone important had been invited.

At the center of the ballroom stood Jonathan Hawthorne, dressed in a perfectly tailored gray suit with a burgundy silk tie. Beside him stood his mother, Eleanor Hawthorne, wearing a glittering sapphire-blue evening gown adorned with pearls worth more than most people's homes.

The cameras flashed endlessly.

Everything looked perfect.

Until the front doors opened.

A teenage boy walked calmly into the ballroom.

He wore faded jeans.

A white shirt.

A simple denim jacket.

He carried nothing except a worn brown envelope.

Every conversation stopped.

Guests stared.

The boy looked completely out of place among the tuxedos and designer gowns.

Security immediately stepped toward him.

Before they could reach him, Eleanor's cold voice echoed through the hall.

"Who let him in?"

Nobody answered.

She narrowed her eyes.

"I asked a question."

One of the guards hurried forward.

"Ma'am, we'll remove him immediately."

The boy didn't move.

Instead, he quietly looked around the ballroom.

His eyes finally rested on Jonathan.

For several long seconds...

Neither of them spoke.

Something about the boy's face felt strangely familiar.

Jonathan frowned.

"Who are you?"

The boy smiled faintly.

"I've been asking myself the same question for seventeen years."

Guests exchanged confused looks.

Eleanor stepped forward.

"This is a private family celebration."

"You have absolutely no right to be here."

Her voice became sharper.

"Leave before I have you dragged out."

The boy calmly met her gaze.

"I would..."

"If this really were your family."

A ripple of whispers swept across the ballroom.

Jonathan's expression darkened.

"What exactly are you trying to say?"

The boy took another step forward.

"My name is..."

He paused.

"...Lucas."

Silence.

"Lucas Carter."

Jonathan looked puzzled.

"I don't know anyone by that name."

"No."

Lucas answered quietly.

"Because someone made sure you never would."

Eleanor's face stiffened.

"That's enough."

She turned toward security.

"Throw him out."

Two guards grabbed Lucas by the arms.

The young man didn't resist.

Instead...

He looked directly at Jonathan.

"Before they throw me away..."

"I want you to answer one question."

Jonathan folded his arms.

"You have thirty seconds."

Lucas nodded.

"Tell me..."

"Have you ever wondered why your son Ethan was born without the Hawthorne birthmark..."

"...but I have it?"

The ballroom became deathly quiet.

Jonathan blinked.

"What?"

Lucas slowly rolled up the sleeve of his shirt.

On his left shoulder...

A dark crescent-shaped birthmark became visible.

Several elderly relatives suddenly gasped.

One old aunt covered her mouth.

"My God..."

"That's impossible..."

Jonathan stared at the mark.

His face lost all color.

Every Hawthorne man for five generations had been born with the exact same birthmark.

Even Jonathan carried one.

Ethan didn't.

Nobody had ever questioned it.

Eleanor quickly recovered.

"It's just a coincidence."

Lucas laughed softly.

"No."

"It's genetics."

She pointed angrily toward the door.

"Enough!"

"You have no right to come here and invent lies!"

Lucas reached into the envelope.

"I expected you to say that."

He slowly pulled out a thick stack of photographs.

Old photographs.

Hospital records.

Birth certificates.

DNA reports.

Security tightened their grip.

Eleanor suddenly looked nervous.

"Don't."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

Lucas ignored her.

Instead...

He walked directly toward Jonathan.

The guards hesitated.

Something in the young man's eyes made them step aside.

Lucas stopped only inches away.

Jonathan looked down at him.

"What is all this?"

Lucas didn't answer.

Instead...

He raised the stack of photographs...

And slapped them hard against Jonathan's chest.

Pictures scattered across the polished marble floor.

Guests instinctively bent down.

Someone picked up the first photograph.

A young woman lying in a hospital bed.

Holding newborn twin boys.

Another guest picked up the next.

Jonathan...

Standing beside that woman.

Smiling proudly.

Holding one newborn.

Another photograph.

A nurse carrying the second baby.

Another.

Hospital records clearly stating:

Male Twin A

Male Twin B

Another guest unfolded a DNA report.

Probability of Paternity: 99.9998%

The ballroom exploded into whispers.

Jonathan's breathing became uneven.

His hands trembled as he stared at the photographs scattered around his polished shoes.

His lips moved...

But no words came out.

Finally...

He looked up at Lucas.

His voice was barely audible.

"Twins...?"

Lucas nodded.

Tears filled his eyes.

"You never lost your son."

"You never abandoned me."

"You never even knew..."

He slowly turned toward Eleanor.

"...because she made sure you never would."

Every head in the ballroom turned toward the elderly woman.

For the first time in decades...

The powerful Eleanor Hawthorne looked afraid.

Very afraid.

Lucas pointed directly at her.

"Look at the hospital records."

"The nurse's sworn statement."

"The adoption documents."

"The surveillance photos."

"You told my father I died."

"You stole me."

"You lied to every single person in this room."

Jonathan's legs nearly gave way.

He looked at the woman who had raised him.

His own mother.

His voice cracked.

"Mother..."

"Tell me..."

"...is any of this true?"

Eleanor opened her mouth.

But no sound came out.

May you like

The silence...

Was answer enough.
