Chapter 3

Lucas couldn't sleep that night.

The old wooden box sat on the table in front of him.

For sixteen years, he had believed he was just another unwanted child left behind by parents who never came back.

Now, a single sentence had shattered everything he thought he knew.

"You were never abandoned... you were stolen."

His hands trembled as he picked up the sealed envelope.

The paper had yellowed with age.

The wax seal had cracked.

Written across the front in elegant handwriting were the words:

"To my grandson, if fate ever returns you to us."

Lucas carefully unfolded the letter.

"My precious grandson,"

"If you are reading this, then the truth has finally found you."

"My name is Margaret Carter. I was the head nurse on the maternity floor seventeen years ago."

Lucas's breathing stopped.

"The night you were born, I witnessed something that has haunted me every day since."

"A wealthy woman entered the nursery after visiting hours. I recognized her immediately because she had donated millions to our hospital."

"Her name was Eleanor Hawthorne."

Lucas looked up in shock.

His adoptive parents exchanged a sorrowful glance.

He continued reading.

"She ordered one of the nurses to wheel one of the twin babies into a private examination room."

"Minutes later, I saw the baby leave through the service entrance with a woman I had never seen before."

"When I confronted the nurse, she begged me to stay silent."

"She said Eleanor had promised enough money to save her husband's life."

"The nurse accepted."

Lucas felt sick.

"I reported everything to the hospital director."

"The next morning, all security footage had disappeared."

"My statement was removed."

"The nurse resigned that same week."

"No one believed me."

"The Hawthorne family was too powerful."

"I spent years trying to expose the truth."

"When I finally located you, I discovered you had already been adopted by a kind couple who loved you."

"I feared dragging you into danger while Eleanor remained influential."

"If you are reading this now, it means I am gone."

"Don't seek revenge."

"Seek the truth."

"Your father never abandoned you."

"He spent years searching for the son he believed had been kidnapped."

"He deserves to know you are alive."

The letter ended with one final sentence.

"Blood remembers, even when people lie."

For several minutes...

No one spoke.

Lucas carefully folded the letter.

Then looked toward the elderly couple who had raised him.

"You knew?"

His adoptive mother nodded through tears.

"We found you the morning after the kidnapping."

Lucas frowned.

"What?"

His adoptive father lowered his head.

"There was an old basket outside our church."

"You were wrapped in a blue blanket."

"There was no name."

"Only a hospital bracelet."

"We immediately informed the police."

Lucas's heart pounded.

"What happened?"

"They told us no family ever came forward."

"They believed you had been abandoned."

The old man closed his eyes.

"We wanted children more than anything."

"When no one claimed you..."

"...the court approved the adoption."

Lucas realized they had never stolen him.

They had rescued him.

His eyes filled with tears.

"You saved my life."

His adoptive mother smiled gently.

"No."

"We were the lucky ones."

Over the next six months...

Lucas refused to rush.

If he was going to confront one of the most powerful families in the country...

He needed proof.

Not accusations.

He hired a private investigator with the money he had saved from years of working after school.

The investigator tracked down retired hospital employees.

One by one...

The pieces began falling into place.

The nurse who had accepted Eleanor's money had moved to another province years earlier.

She was dying from kidney failure.

When Lucas visited her...

She cried before he even spoke.

"I knew you'd come someday."

She handed him a signed affidavit.

"I've lived with this guilt every day."

"I took the baby."

"Eleanor paid me enough to pay for my husband's surgery."

"But he died anyway."

She buried her face in her hands.

"I destroyed a family..."

"...and it changed nothing."

Lucas quietly accepted the document.

"I forgive you."

The nurse stared at him in disbelief.

"You do?"

"I can't spend my life carrying your guilt."

"But I will carry the truth."

The investigator uncovered another bombshell.

Hospital maintenance records showed that three security cameras mysteriously stopped recording for exactly twenty-two minutes on the night of the birth.

Not because of a malfunction.

Because someone manually disconnected them.

Only one visitor had unrestricted access to that section of the hospital.

Eleanor Hawthorne.

There was more.

Financial records revealed that, just two days after the kidnapping, a charitable donation of five million dollars had been transferred from the Hawthorne Foundation to a private medical trust.

The beneficiary?

The nurse's husband.

It wasn't charity.

It was payment.

The final piece came from an unexpected source.

Jonathan's longtime family lawyer, now retired, contacted Lucas after seeing his inquiry.

"I've kept this for seventeen years," the old lawyer said.

He opened a locked filing cabinet and removed a small velvet folder.

Inside was Jonathan's original will.

Lucas looked confused.

"What is this?"

The lawyer smiled sadly.

"Your father rewrote his will after you disappeared."

Lucas flipped through the pages.

One sentence brought tears to his eyes.

'If my missing son is ever found alive, he shall inherit an equal share of my estate, regardless of how many years have passed.'

The document had been signed...

Seventeen years earlier.

Jonathan had never given up.

Not once.

Lucas closed the folder.

For the first time in his life...

He understood something that changed everything.

His father had not forgotten him.

His father had been searching for him...

While someone else had been making sure they would never meet.

Now...

Lucas carried everything he needed.

The birth records.

The DNA results.

The nurse's confession.

The financial transfers.

The hospital reports.

And the photographs of the day he was born.

There was only one thing left to do.

He looked at the invitation lying on his desk.

The Hawthorne Family Charity Gala.

Every influential person in the country would be there.

Including Jonathan.

Including Eleanor.

Lucas slipped the envelope of evidence into his jacket.

He wasn't going to confront them in private.

He wanted the truth revealed in front of everyone who had believed Eleanor's lies for seventeen years.

The Hawthorne family expected a night of celebration.

Instead...

They were about to witness the collapse of the greatest deception in their history.
