Chapter 5

The paper trembled in Ethan's hands.
Sophia leaned closer.
Together, they read Claire's final words.
The day you interrupted my wedding... was the day I realized my greatest prayer had already been answered.
You both still loved each other.
Neither of you stopped.
You only stopped believing there was a future.
Ethan closed his eyes.
Claire had known.
All along.
The letter continued.
Sophia...
Thank you for coming that day.
Everyone thinks you came to destroy my wedding.
You didn't.
You saved me from leaving this world with guilt.
Until you walked through those church doors...
I believed I had stolen someone else's happiness.
Then I saw your tears.
I realized love had simply taken a different path.
Sophia cried silently.
"I never thought..."
"...I could help anyone that day."
Claire's handwriting grew weaker.
Yet every word remained beautiful.
Ethan...
You kept your promise.
You gave me one perfect day.
Now it's time to keep one more.
Live.
Not someday.
Not after your grief becomes smaller.
Live now.
There was one final folded page.
Smaller than the others.
At the top she had written:
"Open together."
Ethan unfolded it carefully.
Inside...
A photograph slipped onto the bench.
It was taken on the wedding day.
Claire stood in the middle.
Sophia and Ethan stood on either side of her.
All three of them were smiling through tears.
On the back of the photograph, Claire had written:
"This is not a picture of goodbye.
It's a picture of love refusing to become bitterness."
One year later...
Ethan returned to the same chapel.
The white roses were blooming again.
Not for a wedding.
But for a charity event.
Above the church entrance hung a banner.
Claire's Last Promise Foundation
Its mission was simple:
To grant final wishes for terminally ill adults who could no longer afford to fulfill them.
Some wished to see the ocean one last time.
Some wanted to attend a daughter's graduation.
Some wanted to celebrate one final birthday.
And some...
Simply wanted to wear a wedding dress.
The foundation began with the money Ethan and Sophia donated from selling the house Ethan had once planned for their future.
Soon, strangers joined them.
Doctors volunteered.
Photographers offered free services.
Wedding planners organized ceremonies at no cost.
Hundreds of dying patients received one beautiful memory before saying goodbye.
Every fulfilled wish carried Claire's name.
Late one afternoon...
Ethan and Sophia visited Claire's grave.
Sophia placed fresh white roses beside the headstone.
Ethan rested the old wedding invitation there.
The one he had written long before life changed everything.
"I kept it all this time."
he whispered.
Sophia smiled.
"I think she'd tell you to let it go."
Ethan laughed softly.
"She probably would."
He tucked the invitation beneath the flowers.
For the first time...
He left it there.
As they turned to leave...
Sophia slipped her hand into Ethan's.
Not because either of them had forgotten Claire.
But because Claire had taught them something neither of them would ever forget.
Love isn't measured by who stays forever.
It's measured by the hope we leave in the hearts of others.
Ethan looked back one last time.
The evening sunlight illuminated the white marble headstone.
For a brief moment...
The breeze carried the scent of roses through the quiet cemetery.
Sophia smiled.
"It feels like she's still here."
Ethan nodded.
"No."

He gently placed a hand over his heart.
"She's everywhere someone chooses love over resentment."
The two of them walked away together.
Not running from the past.
Not replacing it.
But carrying it forward.
Because Claire's wedding had never been about death.
It had always been about teaching two broken hearts that the greatest promise isn't "until death do us part."
Sometimes...
The greatest promise is simply:
May you like
"When I'm gone... keep living."
The End.
