Chapter 4

The envelope rested between them.

Neither Ethan nor Sophia reached for it.

It felt wrong.

As if opening it too soon would somehow make Claire's death arrive faster.

Sophia gently handed it back.

"I think..."

"...she wanted you to read it."

Ethan looked at the familiar handwriting.

His fingers trembled.

"I can't."

Sophia quietly took his hand.

"You will."

"When you're ready."

Three weeks passed.

Claire's condition declined rapidly.

The cancer spread to her lungs.

Then her liver.

She spent more time in the hospital than at home.

Yet every morning...

She still asked the nurses to wheel her bed toward the window.

She wanted to watch the sunrise.

"It's another day I wasn't promised."

she would say with a smile.

"So I'd better not waste it."

Ethan never left her side.

He read books to her.

Played her favorite songs.

Even learned how to braid her hair after chemotherapy left it thin and fragile.

One afternoon, Claire laughed softly.

"I make a terrible bride."

Ethan smiled.

"You make an unforgettable one."

Sophia visited often.

At first, she stood awkwardly in the doorway.

Unsure if she belonged there.

Claire solved that immediately.

She patted the chair beside her bed.

"I've been waiting."

From that day on...

The three of them shared stories.

Old photographs.

Coffee that always went cold because they talked too long.

Sometimes they cried.

More often...

They laughed.

One rainy evening...

Claire asked Ethan to leave the room for a moment.

"I want to talk to Sophia alone."

When the door closed...

Claire reached beneath her pillow.

She pulled out a small velvet box.

"Will you keep this for me?"

Sophia opened it.

Inside...

Was Claire's wedding ring.

"I can't take this."

Sophia whispered.

Claire smiled gently.

"I'm not asking you to wear it."

"I'm asking you to protect it."

She looked out the window.

"When people think about dying..."

"They worry about what they'll lose."

"I've spent my time thinking about what I can leave behind."

Sophia's eyes filled with tears.

"You've given Ethan more than you'll ever know."

Claire slowly shook her head.

"He gave me something too."

"What?"

Claire smiled.

"He made me forget I was dying."

Two days later...

The hospital called at 4:17 in the morning.

Ethan answered before the second ring.

The nurse's voice was calm.

"You should come now."

He already knew.

By the time he arrived...

Claire was still.

Peaceful.

Sunlight was beginning to spill through the curtains.

On the bedside table...

Rested the unopened envelope she had written weeks earlier.

The nurse handed it to him.

"She asked us to remind you."

"Not to wait."

Ethan sat beside the bed.

For a long time...

He simply held Claire's hand.

Then...

He finally opened the letter.

Dear Ethan,

If you're reading this...

Then I finally stopped borrowing time.

Please don't be angry.

You gave me the happiest month of my entire life.

Not because we got married.

Because for the first time...

I stopped feeling like a patient.

Tears rolled silently down Ethan's face.

He kept reading.

I know what you're about to do.

You're going to blame yourself.

You're going to wonder if you could have saved me.

You couldn't.

Cancer was always going to win.

But you made sure it never stole my smile.

He pressed the letter against his forehead.

His shoulders shook.

The final page was folded separately.

Across the top, Claire had written:

Read this with Sophia.

The next afternoon...

Ethan met Sophia in the quiet church garden where everything had begun.

Neither of them spoke.

Together...

They unfolded the final page.

The first sentence stole the air from their lungs.

"The day you interrupted my wedding... was the day I realized my greatest prayer had already been answered."

They looked at each other in confusion.

Then continued reading.

May you like

Claire's last wish...

Was unlike anything either of them had expected.
