Chapter 2

The chapel fell into complete silence.
Ethan held Claire tightly as she struggled to catch her breath.
A doctor sitting in the front pew hurried forward.
He quietly examined her.
After a tense moment, he nodded.
"She's okay."
"Just exhausted."
Claire smiled apologetically.
"I'm sorry..."
"I didn't mean to interrupt my own wedding."
A few guests quietly wiped away tears.
Even the priest lowered his head.
Sophia remained frozen near the altar.
The medical report was still clutched tightly in her hands.
Only minutes earlier...
She had come to destroy this wedding.
Now...
She no longer knew why she was there.
Ethan slowly helped Claire sit on a nearby chair.
Then...
For the first time in three months...
He walked toward Sophia.
Neither of them spoke.
The distance between them felt much longer than the few steps across the chapel.
Finally...
Sophia whispered,
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Ethan looked away.
"Because I knew you."
She frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"It means..."
"If I'd told you..."
"You would've stayed."
Sophia answered without hesitation.
"Of course I would've."
"I loved you."
Ethan nodded sadly.
"I know."
"That's exactly why I couldn't tell you."
Sophia felt tears welling in her eyes.
"I don't understand."
Ethan took a slow breath.
Then quietly said,
"The woman sitting over there..."
He looked toward Claire.
"...saved my life."
The chapel became completely still.
Sophia stared at him.
"What?"
Ethan looked down at his hands.
"Six years ago..."
"I was in a terrible car accident."
"My younger sister and I were trapped inside."
"The car caught fire."
"I couldn't reach her."
His voice began to shake.
"I screamed for help."
"No one stopped."
He closed his eyes.
"Except one person."
He pointed gently toward Claire.
"She was only twenty-three."
"She ran into the burning car."
"She pulled my sister out."
"Then came back..."
"...for me."
Sophia remembered.
Years ago...
Ethan had told her someone had once saved his life.
He never mentioned a name.
"The doctors said..."
"If Claire had waited even ten more seconds..."
"We both would've died."
Sophia slowly looked at the pale bride.
The woman sitting quietly with blood on her hand...
Had once risked her own life to save the man she loved.
Ethan continued.
"After the accident..."
"We stayed friends."
"Nothing more."
"She moved away."
"We rarely spoke."
"Then..."
He looked toward the hospital report still in Sophia's hands.
"Eight months ago..."
"She called me."
Sophia whispered,
"The diagnosis."
Ethan nodded.
"Stage Four."
"No treatment left."
Claire smiled weakly from across the chapel.
"I had one ridiculous dream."
Everyone turned toward her.
"I always imagined..."
"My dad would walk me down the aisle."
She looked down.
"He passed away before I turned eighteen."
Her voice trembled.
"So..."
"I thought I'd never wear a wedding dress."
Sophia felt her anger dissolving completely.
Claire wasn't stealing Ethan.
She was borrowing a single beautiful day...
Before losing every tomorrow.
Ethan continued quietly.
"When she told me..."
"She laughed."
"She said she wasn't afraid of dying."
"But she was afraid..."
"...of disappearing without ever knowing what it felt like to be someone's bride."
Sophia covered her mouth.
Tears streamed freely down her face.
"I told her..."
"She deserved that memory."
Claire looked toward Ethan with grateful eyes.
"I told him no."
She smiled sadly.
"He refused to listen."
Ethan finally looked directly at Sophia.
"I didn't leave you because I stopped loving you."
His voice cracked.
"I left because I couldn't ask you..."
"...to spend the rest of your life watching me choose someone else's final wish over our future."
Sophia burst into tears.
"You should've trusted me."
"I would've understood."
Ethan slowly shook his head.
"No."
"You would've sacrificed your happiness."
"And I loved you too much..."
"...to let you."
Sophia couldn't speak.
Everything she had believed for three months...
Every sleepless night.
Every angry thought.
Every accusation.
Collapsed in a single moment.
Then...
Claire slowly stood.
She walked toward Sophia.
With trembling hands...
She reached into the pocket of her wedding dress.
She removed a small white envelope.
"My lawyer told me..."
"...to give you this."
Sophia looked confused.
"For me?"
Claire nodded.
"If today ever happened..."
"...I wanted you to know the whole truth."
Sophia carefully accepted the envelope.
Across the front...
Written in Ethan's unmistakable handwriting...
Were six heartbreaking words:
"To the woman I'll always love."
Sophia's hands began to tremble.
She slowly opened the envelope.
Inside...
Was not a goodbye letter.
It was...
A wedding invitation.
Dated...
One year from today.

At the bottom, Ethan had handwritten a sentence that left her unable to breathe:
"If miracles don't happen... I hope you'll still say yes."
