Chapter 7 - The House Where Anna Disappeared

Black Hollow was not a mansion.

It was a prison disguised as one.

From the outside, the estate looked abandoned. Ivy covered the stone walls. Broken windows faced a dead garden.

Below ground, every corridor remained active.

Cameras.

Pressure sensors.

Sound traps.

Cells built behind library shelves.

Anna remembered the route Silas used when she was held there, but nineteen years had changed the locks.

Noah’s biometric code opened the first gate.

The second required Elliot.

We entered through a drainage shaft instead.

The tunnel smelled of rust and standing water. Anna moved ahead of me with a small flashlight.

“This is where I escaped,” she whispered.

“You never told me how.”

“Someone opened the grate.”

“Who?”

“I never knew.”

The tunnel led into a laundry room.

A blood trail crossed the floor.

Elliot’s.

We followed it to a narrow cell.

He sat against the wall with a gunshot wound through his side.

His hands were no longer tied.

Silas had left him there to die.

Elliot looked at me.

“You came.”

“For Lily.”

“I know.”

Anna treated his wound while I searched the room.

He told us Lily had hidden the second card between the wires near her back teeth. Silas knew it existed but could not find it without killing her.

“He will,” Elliot said. “Once the reservoir truck reaches position.”

“Where is Lily?”

“Old chapel.”

“Security?”

“Four guards. My father. Richard Cole.”

Elliot grabbed my sleeve.

“Do not kill my father before he tells you where the antidote is.”

“There is an antidote?”

“A limited supply.”

Silas planned to poison the reservoir workers first. The Covenant would then present itself as the only group capable of stopping a larger attack.

Manufactured terror.

Manufactured rescue.

Power purchased with bodies.

Anna asked why Elliot helped Lily.

He looked toward the floor.

“At first, my father told me to follow her. Then she started talking to me.”

“What did she say?”

“That I did not have to become him.”

Elliot had spent his life being shaped into Silas’s heir.

Lily was the first person who treated him as unfinished.

A camera above the cell moved.

Silas knew we were there.

The doors locked.

His voice came through the speaker.

“Daniel, you keep collecting damaged children.”

I shot the camera.

A panel opened in the wall, releasing two guards.

The fight was brief and brutal.

I had promised myself nineteen years earlier that Lily would never see the man I had been.

She was not there.

That did not make returning easier.

My body remembered every movement.

Break the wrist.

Control the throat.

Use the wall.

End the threat.

Anna watched me disable the second guard.

Fear crossed her face.

Not fear of what I might do to her.

Fear that Lily had been right about me.

I stopped before killing him.

That choice mattered more than the violence before it.

We took his access card and moved Elliot into the service tunnel.

He refused to remain behind.

“My father will move Lily if he sees me with you.”

“That is why you stay.”

“No. He believes I am dead.”

Anna looked at me.

“Let him choose.”

I did.

The old chapel stood beneath the central house.

Through a surveillance window, I saw Lily strapped to a medical chair.

Richard Cole stood beside a dental surgeon.

Silas waited near the altar.

He had aged, but power had preserved his posture. His white hair was cut perfectly. A black cane rested against one hand.

I remembered him younger, smiling while men screamed.

He had not changed.

He had only learned cleaner methods.

The surgeon forced Lily’s mouth open.

She cried out through the damaged jaw.

My vision narrowed.

Anna caught my arm.

“Wait.”

Elliot entered the chapel through the main doors.

Silas turned.

For the first time, surprise reached his face.

“Son.”

Elliot held up the second memory card.

“I found it.”

Lily looked at him.

He had removed a blank card from the guard’s access device.

Silas extended his hand.

Elliot approached.

At the last second, he threw himself against the surgeon.

I entered from the side.

Anna moved toward the server controls.

Gunfire shattered the stained glass.

Richard Cole fled behind the altar.

Silas drew a pistol from his cane.

He aimed at Lily.

I fired first.

The bullet struck his shoulder and spun him against the wall.

Elliot freed Lily.

She collapsed into my arms.

Her eyes met mine.

I had imagined what I would say after saving her.

No sentence survived.

She touched my face.

Then she pointed toward Silas.

He was smiling despite the blood.

“You still have not asked the right question,” he said.

“What question?”

“Why did Anna choose this university?”

I looked at her.

She stood beside the primary server, frozen.

Silas laughed.

“Because Lily Walker is not your daughter.”

Continue to the next part: Silas claims Lily’s entire identity was created to hide the true child of The Ghost.
