Chapter 10 - The Memory Lily Never Shared

Federal agents separated us before dawn.
I was taken to a secure detention floor beneath the courthouse.
Anna entered witness protection custody.
Elliot underwent emergency surgery under guard.
Lily returned to Mercy General with Dr. Hale.
For the first time since she was born, I could not reach her.
The government announced that a terrorism investigation had prevented an attack on the city. They did not mention the Covenant.
They mentioned The Ghost.
News channels displayed photographs of Daniel Walker carrying Lily from school events, entering my import office, standing beside Anna’s empty grave.
Every ordinary moment became evidence of disguise.
Senator Harrington survived surgery and agreed to testify.
Jason entered protective custody.
Noah Cole disappeared from the reservoir before agents could question him.
Richard Cole was found dead inside a transport vehicle.
Officially, cardiac arrest.
Marcus said poison.
Silas Vane remained alive in a federal medical facility.
He requested one visitor.
Lily.
The request was denied.
Then Lily demanded to see him.
Dr. Hale delivered her written message to my attorney.
He knows where the missing recording is.
I did not know what recording she meant.
Anna did.
Nineteen years earlier, during the safe house attack, she wore a body recorder containing proof of Silas’s betrayal. The device vanished after the explosion.
If Lily knew where it was, someone had told her.
Or she remembered seeing it.
That should have been impossible.
She had not been born yet.
Unless the message on the bloodstained paper referred to another death.
Anna visited me through reinforced glass.
The bruises beneath her eyes made her look older than the woman I had lost, but her anger remained alive.
“Lily has experienced memory episodes since childhood,” she said.
“What kind?”
“Images she believed were dreams. A burning room. A woman asking her to remain quiet. A silver watch covered in blood.”
“You knew?”
“She told me six months ago.”
“And you still did not tell me.”
“She was investigating them.”
“She is our daughter, not an agent.”
“She became both because of us.”
The words hurt because they were true.
Anna explained that Silas used experimental memory conditioning on prisoners. He believed trauma could transfer through repeated recordings and sensory triggers.
Lily’s childhood piano contained the ledger.
It also contained something I had never placed there.
A tiny audio device installed before we moved into the house.
For years, it played sounds too low for conscious hearing.
Fire.
Gunshots.
Anna’s voice.
Silas had been conditioning Lily from childhood.
Not to implant memories.
To unlock one.
When Lily was an infant, Silas briefly abducted her from the hospital nursery.
The official record said she was missing for forty three minutes due to a staff error.
Anna now believed Silas exposed her to the safe house recording during that time.
“He wanted the sound inside her,” she said.
“Why?”
“So one day, she would lead him to the original device.”
The missing recording contained Silas speaking to someone before the attack.
Someone above him.
The true founder of the network that became the Covenant.
Silas wanted it destroyed.
Lily wanted it found.
My attorney arranged a supervised meeting at Mercy General.
I entered Lily’s room in restraints.
Her face remained swollen. The wires had been replaced. Elliot lay unconscious two floors above her.
She reached for my hand.
I showed her the hidden message.
Ask Lily who killed her mother the first time.
She wrote on a tablet.
Anna did not die in the explosion.
“I know.”
The first time was before that.
I looked at Anna.
She appeared confused.
Lily wrote another sentence.
Anna Walker died before she met you.
The room became silent.
Anna stepped back.
“What does that mean?”
Lily opened the second memory card recovered from her jaw.
A file appeared.
It was recorded nineteen years earlier, before the safe house attack.
A young woman sat inside an interrogation room.
She looked exactly like Anna.
Silas stood behind the camera.
He asked her name.
“Rebecca Lane.”
Anna gripped the bed rail.
Rebecca Lane had been her birth name before entering federal service.
Silas asked, “Where is Agent Anna Walker?”
Rebecca answered, “Dead.”
The video changed.
A body lay beneath a sheet in a laboratory.
The identification card read Anna Walker.
Silas spoke to someone outside the frame.
“Rebecca has completed the reconstruction. She believes she is Anna now.”
I looked at the woman beside me.
She touched her own face.
“No.”
The file showed surgeries, voice training, memory sessions, and federal records being rewritten.
The woman I loved had been born as Rebecca Lane.
Silas transformed her into the deceased Agent Anna Walker to infiltrate my organization.
She was not lying.
Her memories had been constructed before she met me.
The real Anna Walker died during an earlier Covenant operation.
Rebecca had lived inside another woman’s identity for more than two decades.
“Why would Silas reveal this?” I asked.
Lily wrote:
Because the real Anna had a daughter.
A final video opened.
The real Agent Anna Walker stood beside a five year old girl.
The child’s face was familiar.
Not Lily.
Not anyone in the hospital.
Then the girl turned toward the camera.
Dr. Hale, standing near the door, dropped the medical chart.
He recognized her.
“My wife,” he whispered.
The real Anna Walker’s daughter had grown up to become Dr. Hale’s wife, Claire.
Claire Hale had disappeared six months earlier after investigating illegal research at Westbridge University.
Silas had not attacked Lily only because of me.
He believed she had found Claire.
Dr. Hale looked at Lily.
“Do you know where my wife is?”
She nodded.
Then she pointed toward Elliot’s floor.
The monitor above Lily’s bed changed without anyone touching it.
A live camera feed appeared.
Elliot lay unconscious in recovery.
A woman in a nurse’s uniform entered his room.
She removed her mask.
Claire Hale.
Alive.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Daniel, Silas is not the last man from your past.”
She held up the original safe house recorder.
Behind her, Elliot opened his eyes.
Claire placed a gun against his chest.
“The real Ghost wants his son back.”
Every light in Mercy General went out.
The restraints around my wrists unlocked automatically.
From the hallway came the sound of armed men entering the hospital.
Lily squeezed my hand once.
Yes.
Then she wrote three final words on the glowing tablet.

He is here.
Cut to black.
