Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Courthouse

The senator ran toward the main doors.

Locked.

His security men attempted to shoot the hinges, but the steel was reinforced.

The countdown reached nine minutes.

Anna examined the ventilation system.

The nerve agent would likely be released through the ceiling once the timer ended.

Marcus’s transmitter still sent a signal, but the courthouse walls blocked outside communication.

I studied the courtroom.

Silas loved theater.

He had not trapped us there only to kill us.

He wanted us to understand something first.

A second screen activated.

Lily sat inside Black Hollow beside Elliot.

Her jaw wires had been cut.

Not removed carefully.

Cut with pliers.

Blood marked the corners of her mouth.

Silas stood before her.

“Tell your father what you found.”

Lily tried to speak.

The damage made every sound painful.

“She found the original Covenant agreement,” Anna said.

Silas smiled.

“Correct.”

He held up a leather document.

Three signatures appeared at the bottom.

Senator Harrington.

Richard Cole.

And Anna Walker.

I turned toward her.

She did not deny it.

Nineteen years earlier, before Lily’s birth, Anna created a temporary alliance with Harrington and Cole to dismantle my empire from inside.

Silas took control of that alliance after her disappearance.

“You founded it,” I said.

“I founded an investigative coalition.”

“Using criminals and politicians.”

“I believed they would testify against you.”

Harrington laughed bitterly.

“She offered us immunity.”

Anna looked at me.

“I was still a federal agent.”

“And after you loved me?”

“I planned to end it.”

Silas’s voice came through the screen.

“But nobody truly leaves a machine once it knows their name.”

The Covenant agreement gave each founder authority to activate an emergency purge if another member betrayed the group.

Silas had used Anna’s dormant authorization for nineteen years.

Her biometric profile could still shut down the chemical systems.

That was why he wanted her at Black Hollow.

Not revenge.

Access.

Anna placed her hand against the courthouse control panel.

Rejected.

The system required her at the Covenant’s primary server.

The countdown reached six minutes.

Jason searched beneath the witness stand and found a service hatch.

The tunnel below was narrow.

Harrington’s largest guard could not fit.

The senator looked at his son.

“Go.”

Jason hesitated.

For all his father’s corruption, the order was sincere.

We entered one at a time.

Anna first.

Jason after her.

Then Marcus, Harrington, and me.

Two guards remained behind.

The hatch closed above us.

At zero, a hiss filled the courtroom.

No screams followed.

The gas killed quietly.

Harrington stopped crawling.

“My men.”

“Keep moving,” I said.

He did.

The tunnel opened beneath the courthouse basement. Marcus found a maintenance door leading to the storm drains.

We emerged beside the river.

Police vehicles surrounded the building, but no one approached. Harrington had arranged official protection for the meeting, yet those officers now remained behind barricades.

Silas controlled the response.

The Covenant did not need every officer.

Only the ones giving orders.

We used Harrington’s tunnel map to reach the abandoned juvenile facility.

Jason insisted on coming.

His wound had reopened, but he refused to be evacuated.

“My father spent my whole life teaching me our name made us untouchable,” he said. “Lily showed me that only meant nobody had stopped us yet.”

At the facility, we found Noah Cole.

He sat alone in an old interrogation room with a gun on the table.

His father had abandoned him there after the campus attack.

Noah’s confidence was gone.

“Silas said he would protect us.”

“Silas tried to kill Jason,” Anna said.

Noah looked at his friend’s bandage.

He believed us.

He provided his biometric access to the Black Hollow tunnel.

Then he confessed that his father had ordered Lily taken alive because she possessed a second memory card.

The card in her sweatshirt showed the laboratory.

The second contained audio from a private dinner where the three fathers discussed the water attack.

Lily hid it before the boys caught her.

“Where?” I asked.

Noah looked ashamed.

“Inside her jaw.”

Dr. Hale had mentioned a foreign object near one fracture but assumed it was dental debris.

Lily had placed the card beneath a removable retainer.

Silas cut her wires because he was searching for it.

If he found the recording, the only direct proof against the Covenant would disappear.

Noah opened the tunnel.

Before entering, Harrington stopped me.

“If we survive this, you will release the ledger.”

“Yes.”

“Even if it destroys the government?”

“It will destroy men who confused themselves with government.”

He nodded.

For the first time, he looked like a father rather than a senator.

The tunnel descended toward Black Hollow.

Halfway through, Marcus received a weak signal from his team.

The nerve agent had already left the estate.

A tanker marked as municipal treatment equipment was moving toward the city reservoir.

We had to choose.

Rescue Lily.

Or stop the tanker.

Anna looked at me.

She knew the answer before I spoke.

“Marcus, take Harrington and the boys to the reservoir.”

“And you?”

“We go to Black Hollow.”

“You cannot enter with two people.”

“I built places like Black Hollow.”

Anna checked her weapon.

“And I survived it.”

We separated at the tunnel junction.

As Marcus disappeared toward the reservoir, a speaker above us activated.

Elliot’s voice whispered, “Mr. Walker, do not use the east entrance.”

May you like

Then a gunshot sounded through the speaker.

Continue to the next part: Elliot secretly warns Daniel moments before Silas punishes him, leaving Lily alone inside Black Hollow.
