Chapter 3 - The Conference Room

The officers returned from the twenty second floor carrying a locked medical case and a stack of documents.
Behind them walked Dr. Samuel Greer, an attorney named Peter Lang, and a frightened notary who kept insisting she had been told Elena wanted to update her estate plan before the baby was born.
Nolan placed the documents on a banquet table.
The first page appointed Ryan as Elena’s permanent financial guardian.
The second transferred her voting shares in Vale Biomedical to a holding company controlled by Margaret Whitmore.
The final document gave Ryan authority to approve medical decisions for Elena and her unborn child.
Elena read every page.
Her signature had already been copied onto the marked lines.
“It is forged.”
Peter Lang adjusted his glasses.
“Ryan told me you had signed preliminary copies.”
Ryan said nothing.
Elena looked at Dr. Greer.
“What was in the medical case?”
The doctor’s face turned pale.
Nolan opened it.
Inside were two syringes, a bottle of clear liquid, and an unsigned hospital admission form describing Elena as confused, aggressive, and dangerous to herself.
Tessa began sobbing harder.
“They said the medicine would only calm her.”
Celeste grabbed her arm.
“Stop talking.”
Tessa pulled away.
“You said no one would hurt her.”
Margaret turned to Nolan.
“This is a private family matter.”
“A plan involving forged documents and an injectable sedative is not private,” Nolan replied.
Ryan struggled against the guards.
“You need to listen to me. The Whitmores are not trying to steal only Elena’s company.”
Margaret’s composure cracked.
“Remove him.”
The guards did not move.
Nolan held up the flash drive.
“What is inside?”
“Financial records. Messages. A video.”
“Of what?”
Ryan looked at Elena.
“Your father.”
The ballroom became completely silent.
Elena had watched Henry Vale’s plane disappear from radar over Lake Michigan three years earlier.
No wreckage had been recovered.
Investigators concluded that the aircraft had entered the water during a storm. Ryan had held Elena through the memorial service. Margaret had sent flowers. Celeste had sat beside her in the front row.
Elena stepped toward her husband.
“My father died.”
Ryan’s voice softened.
“I thought so too.”
“When did that change?”
“Six months ago.”
Elena was six months pregnant.
The timing struck her immediately.
Ryan continued.
“I received an encrypted message containing information only Henry could have known. It said the ownership structure of Vale Biomedical would change when your child was born.”
Elena knew nothing about such a clause.
“My father left everything to me.”
“He left the company to you. The patents were placed in a separate trust.”
“What patents?”
Ryan glanced at Margaret.
She looked ready to kill him.
“The neurological treatment your father developed before he vanished,” Ryan said. “It is worth more than the entire company. Control transfers to Henry’s first biological grandchild at birth.”
Elena placed both hands over her stomach.
Margaret had not wanted only Elena’s money.
She wanted authority over Elena’s baby.
Nolan looked at the flash drive.
“Where is the brass key?”
Ryan smiled without humor.
“I gave it to the only person in this ballroom Margaret would never search.”

His eyes moved toward Elena’s purse.
Continue to the next part: Elena discovers that Ryan hid something inside her belongings before allowing his family to tear them apart.
