Chapter 2 - The Empty Ring Box

Nolan took the flash drive from Ryan but did not insert it into the security tablet.

“Is it encrypted?”

Ryan’s breathing remained controlled despite the guards holding him.

“It requires the brass key I removed from the ring box.”

“Where is it?” Nolan asked.

Ryan gave a bitter smile.

“Somewhere Celeste cannot reach it.”

Celeste pushed through the guests.

“This is absurd. He is trying to protect his wife now that the plan failed.”

Elena rose slowly from the floor.

Pain moved through her lower back, but she refused to let anyone see how badly her body was shaking.

“What plan?”

Ryan looked at Margaret.

Margaret’s expression warned him not to speak.

Elena stepped closer.

“What were you going to do after they found the ring in my purse?”

Ryan said nothing.

Tessa began crying.

Everyone turned toward her.

Celeste’s face hardened.

“Do not.”

Tessa lowered her hands from her mouth.

“She told me to hide the ring.”

Celeste moved toward her, but Nolan placed himself between them.

Tessa continued.

“The accusation was supposed to become loud enough that Elena would panic. Margaret said Ryan would take her upstairs before the police arrived.”

“Why upstairs?” Elena asked.

Tessa looked toward the private elevators.

“There is a conference room on the twenty second floor.”

Margaret interrupted.

“This girl is unstable.”

“There were documents waiting,” Tessa said. “An attorney, a private doctor, and a notary were already there.”

Elena looked at Ryan.

“What documents?”

His silence answered her before Tessa did.

“Medical power of attorney papers,” Tessa whispered. “Property transfer forms. A statement saying Elena had stolen the ring during an emotional breakdown.”

Elena pressed one hand against her stomach.

The baby shifted beneath her palm.

Ryan had spent months telling her that pregnancy had made her forgetful. He had corrected stories she remembered clearly. He had moved objects and insisted she had misplaced them.

Now she understood.

Every small act had been preparation.

“You wanted to declare me incompetent,” she said.

Ryan finally spoke.

“I needed your signature.”

“You planned to obtain it while I was frightened and isolated.”

“I planned to keep you alive.”

Margaret laughed once.

“Do not make yourself sound noble.”

Ryan turned toward her.

“You were the one who brought the doctor.”

“And you were the one who gave him her medical records.”

Elena felt the room tilt.

Ryan had attended every prenatal appointment. He knew her blood type, medications, and private fears. She had believed his attention was love.

It had been research.

Nolan instructed two officers to inspect the conference room.

Margaret protested, but he ignored her.

Elena looked at Celeste.

“Where is the ring?”

Celeste folded her arms.

“This is my wedding. You have already destroyed enough.”

Tessa opened her cosmetics bag.

The ring was gone.

“I put it here,” she said.

Celeste looked at Ryan.

Ryan looked at Margaret.

Someone had taken the ring after the trap began.

Nolan examined the empty bag.

“The ring may contain more than diamonds.”

Elena remembered the small brass key beneath the box lining.

“What does it open?”

Ryan stared at the flash drive.

“My father in law’s private archive.”

Elena stopped breathing.

Her father, Henry Vale, had been dead for three years.
