Chapter 1 - Search Her

“Search her.”
Margaret Whitmore’s command carried across the ballroom with enough force to silence nearly two hundred wedding guests.
Elena Prescott sat on the marble floor beneath a ceiling of crystal chandeliers, one hand protecting her swollen stomach and the other clutching her small silver purse against her chest.
Her pale blue gown had torn near the shoulder where someone had grabbed her. A thin line of blood marked her wrist. Around her stood members of the groom’s family, bridesmaids in matching champagne dresses, hotel employees, and several wealthy guests who had already decided that silence was safer than defending her.
Celeste Whitmore, the bride, watched from the center of the crowd.
Her white gown glittered beneath the chandeliers. Diamonds circled her throat. Her expression held no panic over the missing engagement ring.
Only satisfaction.
Margaret pointed at Elena’s purse.
“My son gave that ring to Celeste in front of this entire family. It vanished after Elena entered the bridal suite.”
“I entered because Celeste asked me to bring her shawl,” Elena said.
“Open the purse,” Margaret replied.
Elena looked past her toward Ryan.
Her husband stood beside one of the banquet tables in a black tuxedo, his hands held calmly at his sides.
He did not look surprised.
He did not look frightened.
He looked prepared.
“Ryan,” Elena whispered. “Say something.”
For one painful second, their eyes met.
Then Ryan glanced away.
That silence wounded Elena more deeply than the hands pulling at her purse.
Margaret’s personal assistant seized the strap. Another woman reached toward the folds of Elena’s gown as if a pregnant woman might have hidden a diamond ring against her body.
Elena pulled away.
“Do not touch me.”
Celeste tilted her head.
“Then prove you have nothing to hide.”
A bridesmaid named Tessa Grant stood behind the bride. She was pale, twisting her fingers together so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.
Elena noticed.
Before she could speak, every ballroom door closed at once.
Heavy electronic locks clicked into place.
Several guests shouted.
A large security screen descended from the ceiling above the dance floor.
Nolan Pierce, the hotel’s security chief, walked through the crowd carrying a black control tablet.
He was tall, silver haired, and completely calm.
“No one leaves until we understand what happened,” he said.
Margaret turned on him.
“You work for this hotel.”
“I work for the owner of this building.”
A recording appeared on the screen.
The timestamp showed the bridal suite twenty seven minutes earlier.
Celeste entered carrying the velvet ring box. She looked over her shoulder, opened it, and removed the diamond ring herself.
Gasps moved through the ballroom.
Celeste handed the ring to Tessa.
Tessa covered her mouth as the footage showed her slipping it into a cosmetics bag.
Margaret stared at her future daughter in law.
Celeste did not move.
Nolan played a second recording.
Ryan entered the bridal suite after Celeste left. He opened the empty ring box, removed a small brass object hidden beneath the lining, then wiped the box clean before placing it beside Elena’s shawl.
Elena slowly turned toward him.
“You were part of this?”
Security officers moved in.
Ryan grabbed the control tablet from Nolan and ran toward the service elevator.
The doors opened.
There was no elevator waiting behind them.
Only a dark shaft.
Ryan stopped at the edge as two guards seized his arms.
“The ring was never the point,” he shouted.
He pulled a black flash drive from inside his jacket and stared directly at Elena.

“This contains the real reason they needed you under control.”
Continue to the next part: Elena must decide whether the man who betrayed her is also carrying the evidence that could save her.
