Chapter 20 - Nicole’s Children

The cousins were collateral damage.

Haley, Kenzie, Ethan, Paige.

None had ordered portrait.

None promised house.

None forged signatures.

Yet for months, adult conflict cut them apart.

I did not want that.

Ella decided individually.

Paige first.

Easy.

Then Kenzie.

More complicated because Kenzie had repeated Grandma’s comments.

At a supervised family park afternoon, Kenzie said:

“I thought you were getting Grandma’s house and Mom was mad.”

Ella shrugged.

“I didn’t want it.”

“I know.”

“My mom sold it.”

“I know.”

“Does your mom still hate mine?”

Kenzie looked uncomfortable.

“Sometimes.”

Ella nodded.

“My mom sometimes hates yours too.”

I almost choked.

Nicole heard from bench.

So did I.

We looked at each other.

Then both laughed despite ourselves.

Not reconciliation.

Humanity.

Haley joined later.

Ethan mostly cared whether snacks existed.

Children rebuilt faster once adults stopped using them as messengers.

Rule:

No house talk.

No court talk.

No blaming.

If adults broke it, visit ended.

Mom did not attend.

Dad did once.

Eric often.

Nicole eventually joined cousin gathering at neutral park.

First time she and I spent two hours together without fighting.

At end:

“Thanks.”

“For what?”

“Letting kids…”

“They’re not leverage.”

She looked ashamed.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“I’m sorry about second portrait.”

I nodded.

Not forgiveness speech.

Just acknowledgment.

She had begun paying Mark back her share of the $25k dispute? Settlement through divorce. Fine. The parents had repaid; marital settlement allocated. Closed.

Nicole’s life became smaller.

Not destroyed.

She rented.

Worked.

Co-parented.

May you like

Stopped expecting family assets to save her.

That was enough.
