Chapter 7 - The Woman Behind the Glass

Victor shouted for everyone to cover their mouths.

The gas smelled sweet and chemical.

I tore the sleeve from my uniform and pressed the fabric over Lily’s face. Grant wrapped his jacket around her head and lifted her into his arms.

The surgical door remained locked.

Through the glass, Renata placed a mask over her own face while the men pushed Olivia into the freight elevator.

Dr. Kessler hesitated.

Renata grabbed his collar and pulled him after her.

The doors began closing.

Victor fired twice at the lock.

The second bullet damaged the mechanism.

Grant kicked the door open.

We entered the surgical theater as the freight elevator disappeared.

The gas thickened.

Victor found emergency masks inside a wall cabinet. We moved toward the service stairwell while alarms sounded throughout the clinic.

The nurse led us to the loading level.

When we emerged outside, snow had begun falling.

A black medical van raced away along the mountain road.

Grant carried Lily toward our vehicle.

Victor drove.

I sat in the back with Grant and Lily while local security followed.

The van remained visible through the trees.

Renata had only one route toward the highway.

Victor called state police, but communications kept dropping.

Someone had activated a signal jammer inside the van.

Grant looked at Lily.

“Your mother recognized you.”

Lily touched her chest.

“She said run.”

“She wanted to protect you.”

Lily’s eyes moved toward the road ahead.

“From him.”

Grant followed her gaze.

“Who?”

She shook her head.

The van turned sharply onto an unmarked forest road.

Victor slowed.

“That route leads back toward the crash site.”

Grant told him to follow.

The road climbed through dense pine forest. Snow covered the pavement, and the edge dropped steeply toward the valley.

Two years earlier, Olivia’s car had left a road less than three miles from there.

Lily began trembling.

She remembered the landscape.

The van stopped near an abandoned ranger station.

Renata’s men removed Olivia and carried her inside.

Grant told me to remain in the vehicle with Lily.

Lily refused.

She pointed toward the ranger station and whispered, “Room.”

It was the place Renata had mentioned in the bathroom.

Not the basement room.

The other room.

The one where Lily heard her mother calling after the crash.

Grant looked at me.

“She was brought here too.”

We entered through the rear while Victor’s team surrounded the building.

Inside, the air smelled of damp wood and antiseptic.

A child’s red coat hung from a hook.

Lily recognized it.

Grant touched the tiny sleeve.

“You wore this that night?”

She nodded.

Renata had taken Lily from the crash scene and kept her there while Olivia remained alive in another room.

A recording device sat on a table.

Grant pressed play.

Dr. Kessler’s voice asked Lily what she saw.

Four year old Lily cried for her father.

Renata answered, “Your father sent us.”

“No.”

“He was angry with your mother.”

“No.”

“If you tell anyone what happened, he will send you away too.”

The recording continued for hours.

Repeated questions.

Threats.

Long periods of silence.

By morning, Lily no longer responded.

They had manufactured her mutism through terror.

Grant turned off the device.

His hands shook.

I had never seen hatred look so controlled.

A door opened above us.

Renata’s voice came from the second floor.

“Grant, send everyone outside.”

He looked toward the staircase.

“She has Olivia.”

Renata appeared on the landing.

She held a gun against Olivia’s neck.

Olivia could barely stand. Dr. Kessler supported her from behind.

Her face carried scars, but she was unmistakably the woman in every family photograph.

Grant did not move.

“Let her go.”

Renata looked at Lily.

The child stood beside me, frozen.

“You should have remained silent,” Renata said.

Lily’s fingers found mine.

Then she stepped forward.

“You hurt Mommy.”

The sentence was clear.

Renata’s face twisted.

“I saved her.”

“You burned me.”

“I taught you not to destroy your father.”

Grant moved one step closer.

“You are the one destroying me.”

Renata laughed.

“You still do not understand. Olivia was not taken because of the pension money.”

Olivia lifted her head.

“Grant.”

Her voice was weak.

“Do not listen.”

Renata pressed the gun harder.

“She discovered Lily is not your biological daughter.”

The room went silent.

Grant looked at Olivia.

Lily looked at him.

Renata smiled.

“That is the secret your perfect wife was driving away to hide.”

Olivia began shaking her head.

“She is lying.”

“Then tell him who Lily’s father is.”

A gunshot exploded outside.

Victor’s men shouted.

Renata dragged Olivia backward.

The old floorboards cracked beneath them.

Grant reached the stairs.

Before he could climb, Dr. Kessler pushed Olivia through a side doorway.

Renata fired toward Grant and followed.

The door slammed.

Lily’s hand slipped from mine.

She ran after her mother.

Continue to the next part: Renata claims Lily is not Grant’s daughter as the child follows her mother into the hidden passage.
