Chapter 10 - The Voice Behind the Door

Emergency lights flickered on.
Renata lay near the ballroom doors.
The gun had fallen several feet from her hand.
Victor stood in the service entrance with smoke pouring around him.
He had fired.
Grant crawled toward Lily and pulled her against his chest.
I reached my mother.
Her dialysis condition made the gas especially dangerous. Victor’s officers carried her outside while another team opened the ventilation system.
Olivia remained conscious but weak.
Grant lifted her from the chair.
For the first time in two years, husband and wife looked directly at each other.
“I thought you were dead,” he whispered.
“I tried to come home.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Olivia looked toward Renata.
“She told the clinic you ordered the crash. When my memory returned, Kessler increased the medication.”
Grant touched the scars beside her face.
“I am sorry.”
“You did not do this.”
“I failed to see who was inside my house.”
Olivia looked at Lily.
“You found her.”
“No. Emma did.”
Lily moved toward her mother.
Olivia opened her arms.
The child hesitated only once before stepping into them.
She pressed her face against Olivia’s shoulder and began speaking in broken pieces.
“I heard you.”
“I know.”
“She said you were gone.”
“I was trying to reach you.”
“I stayed quiet.”
Olivia held her tighter.
“You do not have to be quiet anymore.”
Renata moved near the door.
She was alive.
Victor’s bullet had struck her shoulder.
Two officers restrained her.
She laughed through the pain.
“You think Olivia’s return fixes anything?”
Grant faced her.
“It ends you.”
“No. It begins the part you were never supposed to see.”
Victor took her weapon.
“Save it for the police.”
Renata looked at him.
“Your brother tried that.”
Victor froze.
Daniel Sloane’s supposed overdose returned to the room.
“What did you do to him?”
“I gave him a chance to leave. The board did not.”
“Which board?”
Renata smiled.
“The one Grant still believes he controls.”
Federal agents arrived before sunrise.
The bathroom recording, the clinic files, and the hidden station evidence were preserved. Dr. Kessler survived and requested immunity in exchange for testimony.
Renata was taken into custody.
My mother received treatment at Callahan Medical Center. Grant paid every bill without asking me to sign anything.
Olivia entered a protected rehabilitation program, but Lily refused to leave her side.
Grant canceled his wedding.
Then he suspended the entire Callahan Industrial board.
For several days, it seemed the nightmare had finally opened toward truth.
Then Victor discovered the foundation accounts were empty.
More than four hundred million dollars had disappeared during the hours we were at Cedar Vale.
The transfers required three executive authorizations.
Renata possessed one.
Dr. Kessler possessed none.
The other two signatures belonged to Grant and Olivia.
Both were digitally verified.
Neither had approved the transfers.
Someone had prepared their identities years earlier.
Grant moved us to a secure guest house while investigators searched the estate.
Lily slept in Olivia’s room.
I planned to return to my own apartment once my mother stabilized, but Lily asked me to stay.
She did not use words.
She placed my hand beside her mother’s on the blanket.
I stayed.
One rainy evening, Grant entered the guest house carrying a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was Renata’s hidden phone.
Technicians had recovered files she believed were destroyed.
One video was dated three months before Olivia’s crash.
It showed Olivia meeting someone inside the Callahan estate library.
The person remained outside the camera frame.
Olivia placed a folder on the desk.
“The pension records prove William started it,” she said. “But Grant cannot know until Lily is safe.”
A man answered.
“You still trust him?”
“Yes.”
“Then you are making the same mistake again.”
Grant replayed the voice.
Victor stood beside him.
Neither recognized it.
The file continued.
Olivia said, “If anything happens to me, Emma Doyle receives the copy.”
Every person in the room turned toward me.
I felt cold.
“I had never met Olivia.”
Grant studied my face.
“Why would she know your name?”
I thought of my mother.
Her dialysis records.
The insurance position at the estate that appeared when I needed it most.
Renata had claimed she hired me.
What if someone else had placed me there?
My mother woke in the adjoining room when she heard voices.
She saw the phone and began shaking.
“Where did you get that?”
I looked at her.
“You recognize it?”
She covered her mouth.
Grant moved closer.
“Mrs. Doyle, did you know Olivia Callahan?”
My mother began crying.
“Not by that name.”
The room fell silent.
“What name did you know?” I asked.
Before she could answer, Lily appeared in the hallway holding the silver locket.
She had opened the back panel farther than before.
A tiny memory card fell into her palm.
Victor inserted it into a secure tablet.
The screen displayed a single video.
Olivia sat inside a parked car on the night of the crash.
Rain covered the windshield.
She looked frightened.
“If Grant sees this, tell him Renata is not the person in control.”
Headlights appeared behind her.
Olivia looked into the mirror.
A black vehicle stopped.
Someone approached her driver’s door.
Before the person entered the frame, Olivia whispered a name.
“Emma.”
I stared at the screen.
My mother grabbed my wrist.
“Do not play the rest.”
“Why?”
Her nails pressed into my skin.
“Because Emma Doyle is not the name I gave you at birth.”
The video continued.
The driver’s door opened.
A woman stepped into view.
She had my face.
Not similar.
Not close.
My face.
Olivia looked at her and said, “You promised Emma would never learn she is a Callahan.”
The woman turned toward the camera.
My mother screamed.
The file stopped.
At that exact moment, someone knocked on the guest house door.
Victor checked the security monitor.
A woman stood outside in the rain wearing the same dark coat from Olivia’s video.
She looked directly into the camera.
Then she held up a photograph of me as a newborn.
My mother whispered, “She is supposed to be dead.”
The woman outside smiled.
Lily moved behind Grant.
A message appeared on the security screen.
EMMA, OPEN THE DOOR. YOUR SISTER OLIVIA HAS LIED TO YOU LONG ENOUGH.
May you like
The lock clicked from the outside.
Cut to black.
